Shires pound Schenck, Hawks soar past GHCA

Boys basketball teams have stayed busy on the court during the holiday break from school.
The standings as of Monday morning were as follows:
    In Eastern Class C, Houlton (7-0) remains atop the standings ahead of second-ranked Penquis Valley of Milo (5-0) and Calais (5-0).
In Eastern Class D, Hodgdon (5-1) has slipped to fourth in the region, behind Jonesport-Beals (5-0), Central Aroostook (5-0) and Bangor Christian (6-0). Southern Aroostook (2-2) is 12th, while Katahdin (2-4) is 13th, Greater Houlton Christian (2-4) is 16th and East Grand School (0-4) is 19th. The top 15 squads make the playoffs.
The following is a recap of games played through Saturday.
Houlton 83, Schenck 39 — At East Millinocket Saturday, the Shiretowners scored early and often, with most of the bench players seeing significant time against the winless Wolverines (0-5). Nick Guiod and Dan Howe led Houlton with 13 points each, while Kole Buzzeo and Christian Crane each chipped in 12 and Dan Swallow added 10.
Jon Chiasson led Schenck with 14 points, while Ryan Leavitt had eight.
Houlton led 15-7, 32-16 and 51-28 at the quarter breaks.
In the junior varsity game, Houlton won 52-28.
  Hodgdon 103, GHCA 58 — At Hodgdon Saturday, the Hawks took an early lead and never looked back as the soared to the convincing victory over GHCA.
Josh Hudson led the Hawks with 27 points, while Tyler Sherman added 22; Chris Hudson, 21;  and Devon Logie 10.
GHCA was paced by Deyrell Vargas, who tallied 30 points, while Russell Socoby added 13.
Hodgdon led 24-14, 52-28 and 83-43 at the breaks.
Ashland 56, East Grand 40 — At Ashland Saturday, the Hornets outscored the Vikings 19-4 in the third quarter to help secure the win over the Warriors. Tyler Levesque scored 22 to lead Ashland, while Cody Blair chipped in 10.
Kenneth Winiarski led East Grand with 19 points and Alex Stoddard added nine.
Easton 59, GHCA 53 — At the University of Maine at Presque Isle Dec. 26, Jared Hafford netted 13 points in the fourth quarter to help Easton past Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Hafford finished with 23 points, while teammate Harvey Brown added 13.
The Eagles were led by Vargas with 25 points, while Socoby chipped in 14 and Dana Brown 11.
GHCA led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter and 30-26 at the halftime break, but saw Easton take a 39-38 lead after three stanzas.
