Girls, boys hoop summaries
The Houlton varsity girls game against Presque Isle was close through the first half of play, but the Wildcats had too many offensive weapons to stop, as they defeated the Lady Shires, 61-34.
After falling behind by a dozen after the opening quarter, the Houlton girls clawed back to within eight points, handling Presque Isle’s pressure. At halftime, Presque Isle led by 10 points, 36-26. Early in the second half, the Wildcats outscored Houlton 13-5 to put the game away.
    Freshman point guard Natalie Hill had a good showing, finishing with eight points, along with teammates Tori Hanson. Katie Condon, Bre Longstaff and Marina Cameron, who all scored five points each.
Chandler Guerrette led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Hannah Graham knocked down 14 and Megan Ireland tossed in 11 more.
Presque Isle remains undefeated on the season, while Houlton slips to 1-1.
The Katahdin varsity girls and boys hosted Greater Houlton Christian Academy on Monday in Stacyville. The Lady Cougars overtook the Eagles, 47-35 behind Megan Merry’s 15 points, Molly Cunningham’s 12 and Ashley Randall’s eight.
For GHCA, Destinee Neureuther scored 11 points, while Olivia Lord netted 10 and Colby Walker added eight.
Last Saturday, the Katahdin boys were downed 62-46 by visiting Bangor Christian, which forced 17 first-half turnovers.
Colton Bivighouse led the Cougars with a double, double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
The Patriots led 13-12 to start the game and 37-21 at halftime. After three, Bangor Christian led 49-32.
In the girls’ game, Bangor Christian edged Katahdin 32-31.
Merry led the way for Katahdin with 14 points, while Mikayla Patterson and Delaney Fitzpatrick added four points apiece.
At the University of Maine Presque Isle, the GHCA varsity girls lost to visiting Wisdom, 51-38.
Walker was high-scorer for GHCA with 10 points, while Lord added eight more.
In the boys’ contest, GHCA overtook Wisdom, 56-45 using a strong third-quarter run, 15-8, to seal the game. GHCA led by a point at halftime, 26-25.
Last Thursday, the Katahdin girls hit a Schenck buzz saw, 61-12. Randall, Merry and Fitzpatrick each had a hoop.
The Southern Aroostook Warriors played even with the Woodland Dragons last Thursday in Woodland, coming up short 54-50.
With the score tied at halftime, 25-all, the Warriors pushed the lead to 44-39 at the end of three. In the final stanza, Woodland erased a seven-point deficit and outscored Southern Aroostook, 15-6, to take the win.
Jesse Boulier was high man for the Warriors scoring 22 points, while Cameron Landry added 11.
Last Wednesday, the Washburn Beavers overtook visiting Southern Aroostook, 58-31.
Carmen Bragg scored 17 points to key Washburn.
For the Lady Warriors, Sable Altvater finished with 13 points and Beth Bishop chipped in with seven points.
In the boys’ game at Ashland, the Warriors edged the Hornets, 52-51, as Cameron Landry scored eight of his 12 points in the final stanza to keep the Hornets at bay. Boulier tossed in 18 points, 14 coming in  the first half; and Will McGary netted 16 more.
Tyler Levesque scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to push Ashland.
The Hodgdon Hawks handled visiting East Grand with ease, 76-36, after opening the game with a 32-8 advantage behind Tyler Sherman’s 16 points and Josh Hudson’s 12.
Sherman finished the night with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, while Hudson and his brother Chris each had 16 points. Jimmy Buzzell fired in 15 points for the Hawks.
For the Vikings, Logan Crone scored 17 and Kenneth Winiarski added 11.
The Hodgdon varsity girls took a 25-2 opening lead and cruised to a 70-22 victory over visiting East Grand.
Lacey McQuarrie fired in 28 points, while Mariah Wiley had 14; Jennah Steamer and Haley Gardiner each had 10 points. Steamer brought down 12 rebounds, while Gardiner had 11.
At Limestone last Thursday, the Lady Hawks narrowly defeated Limestone/MSSM, 44-40. Hodgdon had built a 15-point lead only to see it dissolve as Limestone cut the margin to two points with less than 30 seconds left in the ballgame.
For Hodgdon, Wiley scored 13 points, while Steamer netted 12 and McQuarrie chipped in with 11.
Last Thursday, the Hawks held on for a 73-60 win over visiting Fort Fairfield, which made a strong second-half run.
Hodgdon led 49-28 at halftime only to watch the Tigers come back in the second half of action, as Hodgdon held a narrow 19-17 scoring advantage.
Josh Hudson led a balanced scoring attack with 21 points, along with Chris Hudson’s 17, Tyler Sherman’s 16 and Devin Quint’s 15.
The Hawks overpowered host Van Buren, 73-35, last Tuesday.
Chris Hudson fired in 27 points, while brother Josh tossed in 14. Devon Logie chipped in with 10 points, while Sherman added nine more for the winners.
Hodgdon took a 36-16 halftime lead and extended it over three, 52-23.
The East Grand Vikings were clipped 82-44 by host Woodland last Thursday. The Dragons held a 44-23 halftime lead, extending it through the second half.
Crone led the Vikings with 22 points and Alex Stoddard added 10.
The Lady Vikings used an 8-2 third quarter scoring run to hold on for a 36-29 win over Woodland last Thursday in Woodland. At halftime, the East Grand girls were ahead 15-12.
Shaunna Beaudoin pumped in 19 points, while Chelsea Winiarski had nine.
