HOULTON — Firefighters were called Sunday afternoon to a High Street residence for a report of a kitchen fire.
Houlton Fire Chief Milton Cone said firefighters responded to an apartment building fire at 74 High St. at 3:11 p.m. Ben Adams owns the apartment building and the fire was located in the unit rented by Brandi Guy.
The department’s pumper truck, pumper tanker and ladder truck, along with 24 firefighters responded to the call and spent about an hour extinguishing the fire.
Cone said the fire started in the kitchen when grease spilled from a pan and ignited on a burner before spreading up the hood unit, into the cupboards and ceiling. Smoke was visible from outside the building upon their arrival.
The fire was contained to the kitchen area and was under control by 4:25 p.m. Cone said that Guy was unable to stay in the apartment that day due to damage to the apartment’s electrical wiring and water.
