OAKFIELD, Maine — A local man was left homeless Monday evening after fire destroyed his South Road home.
According to Oakfield Fire Chief Joe White, firefighters were called to the home of Brian Neal at about 11:30 p.m. Monday evening for a report of a structure fire. Neal was home at the time of the fire and managed to escape unharmed, White said.
The home was a total loss.
White said the house was located on a narrow dirt road in a remote part of Oakfield, which made it difficult for firefighters to get into to combat the blaze. He added the fire was believed to have started as a chimney fire from a wood stove and spread throughout the house. By the time fire crews arrived the structure was fully involved.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 3 a.m., but returned at 6:30 a.m. to extinguish a few flare ups. Crews from Patten, Sherman and Stacyville assisted with the fire.
