With the current diabetes epidemic we highlight “The Sweet Life,” by Sam Talbot. Not a conventional cookbook; it has many different recipes with several ingredients we might not find in Houlton; an account of Mr. Talbot’s experiences with the disease since childhood; his passion for cooking with experiments and chuckles in his lively text.
Here are a few tidbits: two-handed recipes (p.73), Mt. Everest north side goji berries (p.106), Spicy cucumber salad with charred red onion and cabbage (p.109), “chick dish”, avocado with roasted watermelon seeds and pea shoot salad (p.113).
Many anecdotes are entertaining as this one: Japanese policemen visited him suddenly one night seeking illegal drug trafficing until they found his Dopp kit. With his hands still in the air, the lead policemen said, ‘“At least you have a very special memory of being in Japan”’.
Throughout the book are tips for new and veteran diabetics, charts and sidebars explaining the glycemic load, portion controls, glycolic index – so much information in an easy-read format with yummy pictures.
