The guest speaker for Oct. 29 at Houlton Rotary Club was Pat Foster with Pregnancy Care Center of Aroostook.
Pregnancy Care Center of Aroostook is a life affirming ministry that empowers people to make informed choices. They provide free pregnancy testing, maternity and infant clothing, educational resources (such as reference materials, videos, and literature), give Moms credit program, parenting classes, post-abortion counseling, survivor intervention program, but most importantly support and friendship.
PCC is able to provide these services confidentially and free of charge due to the generous support of individuals, churches and the local community. The mission of the PCC, according to Foster, is improve the physical, emotional, and spiritual health of their clients and their families by providing compassionate and loving services, while presenting the Bibical wisdom concerning their sexual behavior and lifestyle choices.
Their Presque Isle office was the first in Maine; they now have offices in Houlton and Fort Kent. All staff whether paid (only a few) or volunteer must go through a minimum of 30-hour training. Pregnancy Care Center of Aroostook is a member of Care-Net, a network of more than 1,100 pregnancy care centers through out the United States and Canada, organized in 1985 as a non-profit.
As Foster was speaking it was evident that there is a lot of compassion for those in a “tough” situation. If you have ever been in that type of situation where you believe there is no one to help you through this difficult time then you can better appreciate just what it is that they do. They are non-judgemental, compassionate, informed, supportive, understanding and available to be there when it seems as though no one else is.
The Houlton Rotary Club is a service organization that has guest speakers weekly. Rotarians do not necessarily agree or disagree with any of them, but we want to be informed of what is happening in the local community and around the globe.
