Railroad town — People in Van Buren, which owes its importance as a lumber manufacturing and agriculture center to the Bangor & Aroostook railroad, are looking forward to the early operation of the Grand Trunk-Pacific railroad transcontinental route now in course of construction which will pass through St. Leonard on the opposite bank of the St. John and connect with Van Buren by the handsome steel international bridge.
Halloween ball — The first ball of the season of ‘12 and ‘13 will occur at the Heywood Opera House on Thursday evening. A short concert program will be rendered by Bryson’s complete orchestra and the grand march will form promptly at 9 o’clock, with intermission at 11 o’clock when refreshments will be served at 25 cents per plate.

Lions honor championship team — The Houlton High State Championship Cross-Country team were guests of the Houlton Lions club last Friday at the weekly luncheon. Supt. Phillip Woodworth, Principal Milton Lambert and coach Clyde Stinson were also present as guests.
Monticello celebrates local doctor — A pleasant surprise party was given to Dr. F. O. Hill on Friday on the occasion of his birthday. Thirty-seven years ago, Dr. Hill came to our town as a physician succeeding the late Dr. F. W. Mann and he has given his best efforts to the people of this community and earned their love and respect.

GOP wins in Maine — Maine voters backed Republican candidates for three major offices in Tuesday’s biennial election and scored a clean sweep for the G.O.P. of all county-wide contests in Aroostook. Gov. John H. Reed apparently returned to office by a whisker. With all returns in, Reed’s margin of victory was a scant 799 votes in a total poll of over 293,000.
At the Hop — A public record hop will be held at the Grange Hall in Monticello Friday evening, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds will go toward the benefit of the boys’ basketball team. Admission is 25 cents.

Children’s theater — The Houlton Children’s Theater Puppeteers are presenting “The Beauty and the Beast,” Saturday, at Lambert School; Admission is $1 for adults and 75 cents for children. The theater, which began doing puppet shows last spring, is working toward establishing a permanent puppet troupe.
Church celebrates 125th — As the first of several happenings to commemorate its 125th anniversary, First Baptist Church of Houlton hosted an organ and vocal recital with the combined choirs of First Baptist and Houlton Community Chorus. The program was organized by the church music committee, Ann Barnes and Rev. Robert Farnsworth. Participating were Patricia Flemington, Anne and Larry Hutchinson, Greta White, organists, and Andrew J. Poulopoulos directing the choir.
