Ricker Rumblings
By Lois Downing
Here I am again, after two weeks.
Don’t we all do stupid things — I sure did with the time change. I set all my clocks ahead instead of back. Guess I was in a ‘’fog’’ when that happened.
Thomas Suitter spent an overnight in Bangor recently with a friend. He left on a Friday and returned by bus. His trip was a good one.
Jeannie Hall and her niece, Heidi Hall went to Rochester, N.H. for a weekend. While in New Hampshire, they visited Jeannie’s daughter Robin and her husband, Jim Basham, also her son Tom Hall, Jeannie’s granddaughter Kerri Hasty, Jeannie’s friends Allen and Ida Glidden and their girls.
Florence MacDonald has a friend, Hazel Swimm. Hazel comes and stays with Florence and Florence visits with Hazel. It is so nice to have a friend and to be so close.
Evelyn Callnan has two sets of twins in her family. Both sets are males and beautiful babies. There is Ethan Andrew and Connor Jacob Callnan, grandsons of Paul and Cindy Callnan of High Street. Then there is Theo Callnan and Max Irving Bordenstab — I will give you the parents’ names at another time. What a blessing — two sets of twins to love and have fun with.
Kathryn Hall, who works at Ross Manor in Bangor, was shown on WABI Channel 5 the other day. If you are on the Internet, you can click on Ross Manor/pet show and you will find Kathy.
Two weeks ago Wednesday, Jeannie Hall and Harriet Garnett were guests at Barbara Ganem’s home in a nearby dwelling. Barbara is a former tenant at Ricker Plaza. She served a lovely dinner and the menu was salmon pie, fish chowder followed by cherry cheesecake. The remainder of the evening was spent in fun, talking and playing cards. Needless to say, they had a wonderful time.
Judy Wolf is visiting with Peggy Robinson. Judy is from Hunters, Wa. She is here to visit her son and his family in the Hodgdon Amish community.
Halloween is over — I only had two Trick-or-Treaters, a young boy and possibly his older sister. I was just going to bed when a knock came at the door. Martha Stewart, of television fame, is quoted as saying she used to lock her doors and shut off the lights on Halloween night. Now, that is a shame!
To the tenants: Still saving bags of any size, paper or otherwise. Just leave them at my door and I’ll see that our Good as New Store is supplied. Thank you kindly.
To our readers, we feel blessed that we escaped the recent storm called Sandy. We have snow and cold and hot weather, but nothing like the storm of Sandy, floods, fires, etc. Thank you, good Lord.
Bible reading for today is taken from Luke 14:11: ‘’For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.’’
Have a wonderful week, keep well and God bless.
Island Falls news
Tom Hawkes has returned home to Glenburn after spending a couple of days with Riva and driving her to Presque Isle for her appointments with an eye specialist. While visiting, he was given a grand tour by Peter Connelly, the new owner of the Red Brick Garage and who is planning on making it over into a new restaurant, which they hope will be ready come spring.
Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster were in Island Falls, Nov. 3 and Jane spent some time at the craft fair, while Mary Lou visited with Riva and returned home to Caribou later in the day.
I still see lots of birds flying in and around my feeders and have suddenly noticed that there are a few more woodpeckers around now. Mostly there have been nuthatches, chickadees and wrens. All of these really like the peanut butter and lard mixture I set out for them but the woodpeckers really eat a lot of it. So it keeps me busy mixing the stuff together.
And the other day, I had the good fortune to see a female cardinal near my cedar tree and I have seen her a couple of times since. I throw out sunflower seeds on the ground as they are ground feeders. And my three deer have been arriving about every afternoon and spend several hours in my back yard grazing away.
I think they are safe there during hunting season as they are so close to the house. And, two days ago, I had a buck deer arrive in the late afternoon where he spent about an hour grazing all by himself.
Happy Losers meet
By Shirley Sides
On Oct. 31, the Happy Losers held the weekly meeting at the Congregational Church vestry in Island Falls.
Jackie Pratt, the leader always opens the meeting with the pledge and roll call.
Eight ladies weighed-in and attended the meeting. Mary Shaw was the person who lost the most weight for the week and Shirley Sides was runner-up. Great job ladies! Mary Shaw was also the person who lost the most weight for September and October.
Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer for the week.
The leader led the program for the week. The topic was called Power Of Living Food. Poison food is sugar. People use at least half cup of sugar each day. Meetings are interesting and informative.
Please feel welcome to our group every Wednesday weigh-ins from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more information. See you there!ꀂ
