Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
Feeling under the weather? A picker-upper is our book this week chosen by children’s staff: “Oh, Say, Can you Say What’s the Weather Today?” Children love rhymes and this Cat in the Hat uses a lot of that in the weather descriptions. Pictures are familiar Seuss characters; the fun is in the lilting rhymes using scientific words in just the right places.
Then we have “Honk the Moose” by Phil Stong based on a true older story from Minnesota. Brave Finland immigrant boys convince the town “their” moose can be an asset even though Honk eats tons of high-priced hay, takes up a lot of space in the barn and just won’t go away. Many chuckles are possible from the language, behavior and consequences of this huge creature’s visits – a fun book for parents while their share the story with children.
