100 Years Ago-Oct. 30, 1912

Of local interest — Mrs. Chas. A. Lyons and Mrs. Flora Somerville returned last week from Bangor, where they attended the annual meeting of the Rebekahs. Kenneth Shorey is substituting on the Fort Kent mail route during the absence of regular clerk Frank Brown. Mr. Harry Hogan, who has been living in New Limerick, has moved to Houlton, and Clarence, who has been living in Houlton, has moved to New Limerick on the farm.
Potato experiments — Professor William Stuart of the bureau of plant industry of the United States Department of Agriculture had charge of experiments with 10,000 seedlings planted on the farm of John Watson & Co. this past season. Starting from some 30,000 different varieties by a process of selection the number has now been reduced to 10,000 with the intention to reduce this number by some eighty percent, after repeated eliminations, representing the varieties best suited to the needs of our farmers.

Presque Isle trounced 20-0 — The locals won easily in a football game featured by the plunging of its human catapult, Bob Ruth, and the running of its fast and slippery halfbacks, Niles and Gardner, Houlton High had little difficulty in turning back its traditional rivals from Presque Isle.
Two with one shot — There is a woman in Island Falls, who is 70 years young, who enjoys hunting and fishing more than most of the younger people. Why shouldn’t she, when she can get two partridge at one shot. It was Mrs. T. J. Brittain who performed this feat.

Ricker Potato Classic — Officials at Ricker College announced today the names of the referees that will handle the First Annual Potato Classic at Houlton. Referee-in-chief will be Freeman Brewer. Others named include: Stanford Stromback, Ted Thibodeau and Emmett Porter. Gordon College, Aroostook State Teachers College and Lyndon Teachers College will participate.

Coin club invites new members — The Aroostook Koin Klub will hold its next regular meeting on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gentile Memorial Building in Houlton. Club president, Harry B. Hedrich of Presque Isle stated that the Houlton meeting was planned to enable numismatists from the southern part of the county to meet and exchange coins and information with others interested in the hobby.

Eastern Maine champs — The Houlton Lady Shires defeated rival Madawaska in a decision-making game where there were no tomorrows for the loser and a state title on the line for the winner. The Houlton girls won the game 4-2 on their home field. According to coach Joe Feeney, “Houlton was victorious behind good overall control of the ball and an Albertine Dunphy hat trick.” Dunphy, a senior tri-captain tied the game 1-1 when she scored on an assist from Val Coolong.
Record moose season — The 1987 moose hunting season will apparently go on the books with several new records established since moose hunting was resumed in 1980 after a 46-year hiatus. Preliminary figures from nine stations and game wardens indicate that hunters took 901 moose during the six-day season. The previous record, set in 1985, was 881 moose.
