Southern Aroostook Community School student
Once again this year, Southern Aroostook Community School received a grant from the MELMAC Education Foundation to take a tour of college campuses. Usually the majority of sophomores take the trip, but they may be accompanied by a few upperclassmen.
The trip helps students explore different colleges and encourages them to seek an education beyond high school. The students will be able to walk around the campuses and see the dorms the students reside in during college, eat lunch in the food halls, and tour the many classrooms. They will have the chance to talk to both professors and students at the colleges and get a first-hand look at what it means to go to college and the benefits it can have. Students are also able to ask questions to help them decide whether college is a good fit for them and what college they should look into, depending on their interests.
Last year the trip lasted two days, with the group boarding a Cyr Bus at roughly 5 a.m. to set off for the first college.
The students visited Boston College, Emerson, UNE, Husson and SMCC. This year’s trip will take place sometime in March. While it has not yet been determined where the sophomores will visit this year, some will most likely be in the Boston area.
