The all red scramble held last Saturday was a blast! In addition to the men’s teams playing off the red tees, the ladies had special tee boxes to shorten the holes for them. And guess what, with a 17-under 55, the ladies team of Betty Smallwood, Bev Osborne, Becky Kelley and Goldie Gushee won first gross! Nice job ladies, and wow, what a terrfic eagle on the par four 15 hole! Second gross with a 61 was the team of Francis Cyr, Bill Hollis, Steve Merry and John Walker. One stroke behind was the team of Jon Smallwood, Jenness Gushee, Greg Gayne and Ralph Powers.
Taking first net was the team of Ola Tucker, Tim Thoreson, Parker Walker and Steve Walker with a score of 47.1. The ladies won all the skins, four of them, so they really played well and cleaned-up! We’ll do another one of these scrambles, if not this fall, come next season, as everyone just loved the ‘new’ course!
An ace was recorded on the par three seventh hole by Lawrence Parker from Vermont. Parker used his pitching wedge and his shot was witnessed by Jefferson Parker and Kimberley Parker. Nice shot, Lawrence! That makes the fourth hole-in-one at VaJoWa this summer, two of which have been by Tom Ryan and one by Ben Walker (the par four sixth hole!).
On Columbus Day weekend (October 6-8) we’ll hold one more very popular Red/White/Blue scramble (play six tee shots from each of the three tee boxes). The format will be four-person teams, with skins and pins extra. The entry is $10/player with mixed teams allowed, but the ladies must play the same tees as the guys. There will be winners for gross, net, youngest team (under total age of 60), oldest team (with at least 275 years total age) and longest drive on no. 17. As before, you may play anytime during the three-day weekend; and you may play as many times as you wish, either on the same team or different teams (entry due each time you play). We’re looking for about a 100 golfers this time, so invite others from other courses and spread the word.
On October 13-14 we’ll host a two-ball mulligan-scramble. It is a little different, but fun and interesting! It works like this: Two-person teams with each person playing each shot twice, if they wish! There are no additional mulligans. You can play any time, but play in a foursome if possible, and turn your signed and attested scorecards in at the end of play with names and handicaps recorded. You can play on both days, on a different team, and the entry fee is $10 per player for each time you play.
