Dance For The Dogs
By Jann Bonkowski Votaw

BRIDGEWATER — Do you support your area canine officers? If the answer is yes, come on out to the Bridgewater Historical Hall on Saturday Sept. 29. The Bridgewater Historical Association will be holding a dance to help raise money that will benefit a canine officer from the area. This year’s beneficiary will be Gleni, a canine officer with the Maine State Police who is stationed in Houlton. Gleni is named after a fallen state trooper. He is in need of a pen so he can have a place to relax when he is off duty and his handler have some down time too. The pen will be passed on to another canine in the years to come.
Our first Dance For the Dogs took place a couple of years ago and the BHA was able to raise enough money to purchase a protective vest for the Aroostook County Sheriff’s canine Maxx.
Once again the dance takes place on Sept 29 at the Bridgewater Historical Hall located at 485 Main Road in Bridgewater. The dance will run from 8-11 p.m. To help raise money we will also be selling raffle tickets. The top prize will be a handmade quilt and the second prize is a wood carving. The third prize is a food basket. The raffle drawing will take place at a later date. For more information, contact me at 425-7901. We look forward to seeing you there. Thank you for your support.

Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing

Good morning everyone or good afternoon, or evening. Depends on what time of day you are reading the Houlton Pioneer Times, the only newspaper in the world interested in Houlton, Maine. Joyce Bryant hosted a baby shower recently for her granddaughter Brandy. She had at least 25 people at the shower. Joyce is a great hostess. She wishes to thank everyone who helped with the shower, especially Brandy’s mother.
My great-nephew, Wayne Polk, from Calais drove up to my place and visited me for the first time. His girlfriend Christy accompanied him. We went to Grammy’s Country Inn for dinner and had great meal, and service too. I forgot my server’s name but she was good (Another Brandy, I think)! They all had boxes of food to take home, as did I.
Thomas Suitter had surgery in Bangor recently. He is unable to ride his bicycle at this time. Word has it that Lorrie Stevens, our newest tenant on the first floor is in Florida, at this writing.
Here’s the list of people attending the recent community barbecue: Sylvia Thompson, Priscilla Brownlow, Evelyn Callnan, Irene and Sandy Anderson, Mildred Paissiejiani, Carmen Chasse, Paul A. Armstrong, Jeannie Hall, Florence MacDonald, Connie Barry, Saddie Carmichael, Dale DeVoe, Robin Chambers, Harriet Garnett, Doris Hogan, George Garnett, Elizabeth Britton, Dot Campbell, Thomas Vasko, Joyce Bryant, Mike Tuttle, and Lois Downing. Our chefs were Brian and Charlene Henderson.
Christie Hutchinson had a birthday recently. Her sister, Helen Folsom, was born on her first birthday. How cool is that!
My angel writing is: There are angels all around us, hidden barely out of sight; you may catch a warm halo glow or the rustle of a wing in flight; There are angels all around us, though we rarely get to see that there are angels all around us, watching over you and me.
I have more rumbles but it will have to wait until the computer is ready to cooperate! Have a safe week; but one full of joy and love too.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 0233, HOULTON
By Lois Downing

Take Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday meeting, Sept. 21. Attendance was small, mostly on account of sickness, but the official count was 12, which includes 3 KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly).
Our leader, Diane Folsom, conducted the meeting. Loser of the week was Denise Clark with Millie Gagnon runner-up. Millie took the skinny dish home.
The chapter is starting a new contest with Betty Ivey as chairman. Papers were distributed on the contest, to run for 10 weeks. The contest is called ‘’Loser Lotto.’’ Each person entering the contest pays $1.00 fee and will be distributed to TOPS and KOPS winners.
The program was headed by Charlotte Marley called ‘’Lose Weight Without Dieting; Sound too good to be true?’’ Some of the phrases were: Instead of trying to lose weight while you sleep, why not lose weight while you’re awake!; Is food really a pleasure?; (Food is a necessity — not a pleasure.) Make meals last — don’t take shortcuts; eat slowly, chew carefully.
At the end of the program, Charlotte had a small ball of yarn which each member held until she found a knot. At the knot, the member holding the knot would share something about TOPS that has worked for her. It was an excellent program.
If you need extra information about the chapter, you may call Charlotte at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653. Weigh-in at the chapter is 8-8:45 a.m. every Friday; the program lasts about an hour starting at 9 a.m. Come, socialize and lose weight.
