In couples golf on Sunday, a four-person scramble, where everyone had to have at least one drive, was played. Finishing first was the team of Stuart/Becky Kelley and Ted/Terry Pettengill with a three under par 33. Next was the team of Ralph/Valerie Powers and Greg Gayne/Bev Osborn with an even par 36. They were followed in third by Ola/Diana Tucker and Francis/Sally Cyr only one stroke back. The couples meet at 3 p.m. each Sunday.
Ben’s famous (or rather infamous) ‘Revenge … Cry-Baby’ scramble is set for Saturday, Sept. 15 with a shot gun start at 10 a.m. For those not familiar with the format, it is a three-person scramble, with the trick being that Ben Walker, the golf course superintendent, sets up the course a little weird! He does it really silly, with odd tee off placements, stupid pins (Ben’s words) and who knows what else. It is usually anything but fair, but the challenge is always interesting. The entry is $20/person with prizes for both gross and net.
The Men’s Twilight League champions are Bill Dwyer/Warren Walker. Congratulations guys! They played a tight match in the final as they bested the team of Reid Stanley/Ken Delano in a sudden death playoff … that’s the way for a championship to end! On Tuesday the guys had a wonderful end of the league barbecue and scramble golf. Be sure to check the pro shop for the teams that were winners of pro shop credtis/prizes.
With fall approaching, keep in mind that terrific course conditions and discount fees make this a perfect time to play VaJoWa. The pro shop has a half price sale on many items. There is a golf lesson special for September to be done by John … play three holes, work on various shots for an hour … only $30 for some pointers that are guaranteed to improve your game … yes, guaranteed! Check with John at the pro shop to book your lesson.
Coming the ‘Red Zone’ or maybe ‘Seeing Red’ looking into September, on the 22nd. We’ll hold a ‘Red Tee Box’ scramble so get your team together and see how low you can go! Entry is just $5 per player, four-person teams, with gross and net prizes overall, and prizes for low gross women’s team (the ladies will have special tee boxes to shorten the course for them) and low gross student team. This tournament is sort of like playing a par three course, so this is a little something out of the norm as we play a ‘different course’ for a Saturday. We’ll do a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
