HODGDON – Ruby Smith Sjoberg, 94, died September 2, 2012, in her home where she had lived since 1948. She was born August 7, 1918, in East Hodgdon, daughter of Miles and Dora (Gildard) Smith.
Ruby graduated from Ricker Classical Institute in 1936, attended several post-secondary schools, and received her B.A. from Ricker College in 1964.
She taught at several local schools before enlisting in the US Navy during World War II, serving as an aerographer’s mate from June 1943 to November of 1945. After marrying Wallace Sjoberg of New Sweden in August of 1946, she became a homemaker and mother of five children. As the children got older, Ruby resumed her career teaching in schools in the Hodgdon area and retiring in 1977. While teaching was one of Ruby’s passions and her family was of great importance, her highest priority was her relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Ruby was always looking to meet the needs of others. Her motto was “Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man.” -(Sam Walter Foss) There are many people who can testify of Ruby’s doing just that. She was a very active member of Hodgdon United Baptist Church for more than sixty years.
Ruby is survived by five children, their spouses and children: Paul and Marilyn H. Sjoberg of Hodgdon, their children, Jeremy, Scott and Johanna; Patricia and Kenneth Foster of Hodgdon, their children Marvin, Wendy Smith and Nathan; David and Susan Sjoberg of Edwards-burg, Mich., their children, Katie Yonke, Adam Sjoberg and Rachel Ohman; Frederic and Marilyn D.
