MONTICELLO, Maine — Motorists traveling north of Houlton on U.S. Route 1 should always be on the lookout for moose. There’s a spot just south of Monticello where you’ll spot one every time, but don’t try to avoid it — it’s the Blue Moose Restaurant and well worth a much closer look.
The parking lot is usually crowded and the rustic log cabin looks small from the road, but inside there is plenty of room to sit down, open up the extensive menu and order up some delicious home cooked food. There’s also lots of friendly conversation to be shared.
Owner Bob Lalone purchased the Blue Moose, conveniently located along the ITS 83 snowmobile and ATV trail, 14 years ago. He attributes his restaurant’s popularity with locals and out-of-towners to the fact that everything served by his staff is made fresh.
“There’s nothing frozen or pre-packaged here. We even started cooking with canola oil long before it was the thing to do,” Lalone said.
The Blue Moose Restaurant specializes in seafood, steaks and chicken. The beef is all Angus certified and the seafood arrives two weeks a time from Maine Shellfish out of Ellsworth. Seafood and chicken is breaded in-house and made to order. Also, diners may enjoy a beer, cocktail or glass of wine with their meal.
Lalone offers an All-You-Can-Eat Fish and Chips special every Friday and a Prime Rib Special on Friday and Saturday nights. Plan on getting to the Blue Moose early, as reservations are not accepted. Mexican food is now offered every Tuesday evening from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday is now pizza night with a variety of specialty pizza pies served from 4-8 p.m.
A 20 percent Senior Citizen Discount is honored every day at the Blue Moose, making it a regular destination for Aroostook’s more seasoned residents. A full breakfast menu offers something for everyone.
The Blue Moose Restaurant is open Tuesdays through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays through Sundays, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The phone number is 538-0991.
“We are known for great food, great service and reasonable prices,” Lalone said. “What more can you ask for?”
Stop at the Blue Moose and see what everyone’s talking about. You won’t be disappointed. You can also follow them on Facebook.
