Ludlow — Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tapley and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Merrill went to Chase’s Bog to pick blue berries on Wednesday and returned on Saturday. They reported them quite thick.
Called to Caribou — Walter Cary and wife and Mrs. Theo. Cary went to Caribou Monday called there by the death of Mr. Cary’s uncle, Dr. Jefferson Cary. Dr. Cary was one of the sons of Shepard Cary, one of Houlton’s pioneer settlers and prominent businessmen.
Fringe benefit — The Times office was closed on Wednesday afternoon to allow employees to attend the Houlton Fair.

Expanded curriculum — Superintendent Phillip H. Woodworth of the Houlton-Hammond-Littleton School Union today announced the addition of vocational courses at Houlton High School when classes resume on Sept. 13. Charles W. Wood will head this vocational department, assisted by Charles Allen.
New teacher — Miss Cleo Tuttle, daughter of Mrs. Harley Sharp of Linneus, has accepted a position as teacher of English and history in the High School of Brownville Junction for the coming year.

Ricker College adds to staff — The executive committee of the board of trustees at Ricker College has confirmed the appointment of 12 new instructors and administrative staff for the coming semester. They include: John Elliott, mathematics; Marion Nicholson, biology; Dr. Francis Pascal, Spanish; Lee W. Sutherland, business administration; Garrett Albert, geology; Roland S. Gray, physical education; and Gudrun Saadah, music/house mother.
Change of guard — Municipal Court Judge Albert Putnam swore Harry Baulch in Monday as Clerk of Courts, pro tem, in the County Court house. He replaces Mrs. Grace Gildred, who resigned.
New Houlton teachers — Superintendent George Milner announced the appointment of 12 new teachers in the Houlton public school system. They are: Mansfield London, general science; Eugene Jackins, French; Ruth E. Snell, social studies; Mrs. Ruth Peabody, eighth-grade reading; Ray Humphreys, guidance and occupations; Clyde Stinson, science; John Small, agriculture; Mrs. Marilyn Sprague, English; Robert England, driver education; Mrs. Gertrude Carson, home economics; Elwood Scott, eighth-grade math; and Mrs. Nellie Gillenwaters, seventh-grade reading.

Rides to first — Megan Putnam, daughter of Fred and Cathy Putnam, rode to first place in the Junior Exhibitor Dressage competition at Bass Park in Bangor.
Guest of honor — Mary Williams was the guest of honor at a party on the occasion of her 102nd birthday, hosted by the employees of the Gardiner Nursing Home. The longtime Hodgdon resident’s favorite topic of conversation is raising flowers, especially gladioli which she used to raise and sell to local florists.
