Houlton Pioneer Times photograph/Gloria Austin HERE WE GO — Runners participating in The County Open half-marathon challenge last Saturday in Island Falls take off from the starting line to run the course under muggy, humid conditions. P.J. Gorneault and Sharon Hathway were the overall male and female winners of the race, with Gorneault finishing in a time of 1:12:23 and Hathway completed the course in 1:33:23.
Under humid, muggy temperatures and overcast sky with showers, 80 runners and 11 relay teams turned out to participate in The County Open half-marathon held Saturday, Aug. 11 in Island Falls.
P.J. Gorneault of Caribou was the first runner across the finish line with a time of 1:12:23, for the first-place prize of $200. He was followed by Nicholas Wheeler of Bangor with a time of 1:15:44, for the second-place award of $150. Taking the third-place prize of $100 was Evan Graves of Caribou in a time of 1:19:02.
Sharon Hathaway of Island Falls was the first female to finish the race, winning the $200, with a time of 1:33:23, followed by Kristine Guaraldo of Brewer in second with a time of 1:34:34, for the $150 award and in third, $100, was Marie Beckum of Caribou with a time of 1:36:05.
Caribou’s Leo Kashian was the winner of the male master’s division, clocked at 1:32:20, while Kimberly Wright of Mapleton took the female master’s division in a time of 1:42:47. Both runners won $50.
The first-place team in the 4-man relay was Daniel Good of Hampden, Erica Tweedie of Houlton, Dean Waring of Brunswick and Noah Parker of Hampden with a time of 1:54:29. Winners of the 2-person relay were Marie and Thomas Beckum of Caribou at 1:28:57.
Age category winners were: 19 and under, female and male, Lauren Hodge, Middletown, Conn., 1:46:22 and Tyler Strid of Caribou, 1:42:13; 20-29, Stephanie Graves, Presque Isle, 1:39:29 and Ian Fraser, Brewer, 1:23:16; 30-39, Jill Dery, Hamdpen, 2:01:38 and Joseph Capehart, Bangor, 1:21:02; 40-49, Rachel Scheff, West Newton, Mass., 1:45:39 and Randy Johnston, Grafton, N.B., 1:33:48; 50-59, Lisa Kingsbury, Hampden, 1:45:40 and Larry Hodge, Middletown, Conn., 1:36:21; 60-69, male, Larry Tonzi, Linneus, 1:42:38 and 70-plus, male, Philip Pierce, Falmouth, 1:58:33.
