Yard/bake sale in Bridgewater
By Jann Bonkowski Votaw

BRIDGEWATER, Maine — The Bridgewater Historical Association will be holding a yard and bake sale on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 17-18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come on in and see what’s for sale. Refreshments will be available. Tables are also available for rent at $10 each.
Don’t forget there is live music by “OUTSIDE IN” on Thursday nights from 6 to 9 p.m. They perform a wide variety of music styles. Bring your dancing shoes and show us your moves on our wood dance floor. There is no cover charge however, donations are greatly appreciated. The musicians are all volunteers who donate their time and talents for you to enjoy and making it possible for all proceeds to go directly to the BHA. They too are greatly appreciated. Refreshments are available on music nights.
We do have something special in the works for next month so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Events are posted in the Houlton Pioneer, The Star Herald and on the Bridgewater Historical Association’s Facebook Page. Start getting your costumes together as we will be holding our Halloween Dance again this year.

Island Falls news

Gail (Webb) Davis arrived last week from South Carolina to spend a few weeks at the Webb cottage on Pleasant Pond and to enjoy the Island Falls Summerfest activities and visit with friends and family, brothers Ronald (Juny), and Roger, and his mother, Gertrude, who lives in Patten. While here she also ran in the 5K run-walk race and came in second in her age group.
Maurine (Harrison) Hannaford has been a recent guest of  her aunt, Riva Hawkes and had a great time touring around the area, meeting old friends and enjoying the company of her cousin, Tom Hawkes and his family, who arrived  Aug. 3 to spend a couple of days in Island Falls. On Aug. 4  Tom, son Chris and wife Amanda, Maurine and Riva all attended the Alumni banquet, as Tom was a member of the 1962 class that was having its 50th reunion. All have since returned home and things have returned back to normal after a fine Summerfest week.
I haven’t mowed my lawn in several weeks now because of the extreme dryness and the grass isn’t growing much. Just producing a lot weeds that are 2-4 inches high and don’t look very  good. All lawns are very brown and really need a good soaking rain. During the high wind last Sunday, I lost a limb from a tree on my back lawn, which is now lying on part of my lawn, waiting for Tom to come up from Bangor with his chain saw.
A friend was telling me about a big buck deer she saw the other day as she was heading for Patten so guess the deer have not forsaken this area yet. Sure would like to see them in my area, even if they do tend to nibble on gardens.
