Author Anne Dillen Pearce Lehman will visit the Cary Library on Aug. 6 at 6 p.m.. to talk about her book “Mother’s Painful Secret, from the Howling Wilderness to the Halls of Congress: The Saga of Five Generations of an American Family.”
The author traces four generations of her family, who were rugged and enterprising settlers carving a living out of the wilderness of northern Maine. The first four generations of the Dillen, Dillon, Dilling family are known from never before published letters from 1842-1881, which contain more than 100 surnames, mostly Aroostook County. They were saved by Eliza Dillen, the first born in the New World, in Houlton in 1826. The complete set of Dillen letters is included at the end of the book.
“It should be very informative,” said Linda Faucher, librarian. “Join us to learn more of how banishment from Ireland in 1818 led to hardship and adventure in early America.”
