The First Congregational Church of Houlton, United Church of Christ has announced the achievement of its status of an “Open and Affirming” church as conferred by the denomination of the United Church of Christ.
The Open and Affirming status includes much study, prayer, and, finally, consensus to pledge to provide extravagant welcome to all people as set forth in their covenant statement below:
The Covenant Statement of the First Congregational Church of Houlton, UCC: Believing we are all God’s children created in God’s perfect image, in order to follow the path of love and compassion as set forth by Jesus, we welcome with open minds and hearts all those persons of every age, race, ethnicity, economic status, ability, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, and family structure to join us in the blessings and responsibilities of discipleship as we learn and grow according to God’s still-speaking word.
We invite all those who agree to stand with us in the pursuit of equality and justice for all; for no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you will find a safe and loving place with us at First Congregational Church of Houlton, United Church of Christ.
First Congregational Church is the 43rd congregation of 176 churches in the Maine Conference of the UCC and the 1,028 church in the national denomination of the United Church of Christ to receive this honor.
