The “Other Maine” Project of Aid for Kids has received a check for $5,000 in order to provide new, quality clothing, books and other essential items to help low-to-moderate income families make ends meet in 2012. These funds were a portion of the $25,000 seventh annual Community Development Grants awarded to several non-profit organizations in communities served by Machias Savings Bank.
The “Other Maine” Project has over 30 distribution partners in northern Maine, which new merchandise is allocated to children, families and seniors most in need. The $5,000 will cover the shipping and handling costs of $150,000 worth of books, blankets and other needed items ordered and distributed through food pantries, schools and shelters. Increasing literacy and easing the strain on household budgets are the goals.
Dannette Ellis, director of The “Other Maine” Project, has received and distributed over $1 million worth of new goods to those in need in the past few years in Houlton and surrounding areas, primarily Aroostook and Washington counties.
Dawn Degenhardt is executive director of Aid for Kids, a humanitarian aid organization run by experienced volunteers with an overhead of less than 1 percent.
