Local high school principals have announced their choices for the Principal’s Award for 2012. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
The local award winners include Cody Woods, Houlton; Kimberly Levesque, Hodgdon; Ethan Holmes, Greater Houlton Christian; Sonja Williams of Katahdin High School; and Morgan Gustin, Southern Aroostook Community School.
Award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center on Saturday, April 7. The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 140 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association that represents Maine’s school administrators.
Levesque, a senior at Hodgdon High School, was selected by Principal Mary Harbison to receive the 2012 Principal’s Award.
“Through-out her years at Hodgdon, Levesque has shown herself to be an outstanding student, athlete and citizen within the school,” Harbison said. “She will have earned a total of 16 college credits at the conclusion of her high school career.”
Levesque played soccer, basketball and softball all four years of high school. She was also a member of the Maine State Equestrian Team through 4-H for the past three years. She has been the class president for four years; vice president and president of Student Council; and president of National Honor Society. Levesque is active in her 4-H group and the Saint Mary of the Visitation Youth Group.
Levesque is the daughter of Rudy and Anita Levesque of Linneus.
Woods, a senior at Houlton High School and son of Dr. Karl and Lisa Woods of Houlton, has been selected to receive the 2011 Principal’s Award, Principal Marty Bouchard announced Monday.
“Cody is a fine young man who exemplifies scholarship and citizenship,” Principal Bouchard noted in making the award. “His tremendous work ethic and positive personality are traits that will serve him well in future endeavors.”
Holmes, a senior at Greater Houlton Christian Academy who lives in Houlton, was chosen by Head of School John Bishop to receive the MPA Principal’s Award at his school.
“Ethan has distinguished himself in the classroom, on the court, and in the community. I have seen him really push himself when others would have given up; he has shown real character during his time at the Academy,” said Bishop.
Gustin of Merrill, is a senior at Southern Aroostook Community School, She was selected for the Principal’s Award by Principal Jon Porter.
“Through-out her years at Southern Aroostook Community School, Morgan has distinguished herself in the classroom, on the playing field, and as a leader in the school and the community,” Principal Porter noted in making the award. “She very much deserves this recognition.
Williams, a senior at Katahdin High School, was chosen by Principal Rae Bates for the MPA award. A resident of Patten, Williams distinguished herself at Katahdin High School, by her work in the classroom, as well as being a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, and a class officer.
