Houlton teams win junior high tourney

MVP, all-stars chosen during Southern Aroostook Invitational
The Houlton Junior High School girls and boys captured the 39th annual Southern Aroostook Community Junior High School Invitational Basketball Tournament titles Feb. 13-15.
    The Houlton girls defeated Greater Houlton Christian Academy, 43-23, while the Houlton boys powered by Southern Aroostook, 56-38.
The Houlton girls are coached by Ben Drew, while GHCA is coached by Clyde Warman and Montie Graham. The Houlton boys are led by Matt McCluskey and Roger Brown, while Southern Aroostook is coached by Tim Toothaker.
The girls teams made their way to the championship round, with GHCA overtaking Hodgdon, 52-3 in their opening game, while Houlton overwhelmed Southern Aroostook, 42-27 in the semifinals. Southern Aroostook had beaten Katahdin, 39-22, in their first-round contest.
In boys’ action, Katahdin topped GHCA, 57-27, in the first round, while Southern Aroostook triumphed 47-17 over Hodgdon and Houlton raced by Katahdin, 84-42.
Houlton’s Katie Condon was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while Natalie Hill of Houlton; Cassidy Quint of Katahdin; Chloe Raymond of Southern Aroostook; Colby Donovan-Walker and Rylee Warman of GHCA all were elected to the all-star team.
Garrett Putnam of Houlton was recognized as the boys’ tournament Most Valuable Player, while Garrett Ring of Houlton; Jackson Mathers and Nolan Altvater of Southern Aroostook; Dana Brown of GHCA and Tyson Porter of Katahdin all were named to the all-star squad.
