100 Years Ago-March 6, 1912
Aroostook Times

    Ludlow — Mr. A.E. Small has received a crate of very delicious oranges from Mrs. Obed Foss, from her orange grove in Florida.
    Houlton — The B.&A. Railroad was up against a serious problem last week, disposing of the heavy fall of snow in their yards. Nearly 100 shovelers were employed for several days and train load after train load of snow was hauled out and dumped off the bridge.
    Monticello — Terris’s Moving Picture Co. gave a show, dance and supper in the Grange Hall. Music was furnished by a three-piece orchestra.

    Sweater Game — The Houlton High “Sweater Games” will be played in the H.H.S. gym. This year the 1937 varsity girls basketball team will meet the “Dads” of the boys and girls teams in what should prove to be a riot of fun and action. A boys contest will follow with the best school boy basketeers. All proceeds will be used to purchase letter sweaters for the senior boy and girl athletes of Houlton High School.
    Local — Of interest to the many friends of our popular toe and acrobatic dancer, Charlotte Troy is that while at the Caribou Carnival where she danced at the coronation of the queen, she was guest of Gov. and Mrs. Barrows in their box during the evening. She has been invited to dance at a House assembly in Augusta in the near future.

    Golden Promise — Over 200 Girls Scouts and Brownies from Houlton and Littleton will participate in the “Golden Promise,” a 50th anniversary ceremony for Girls Scouts at the Gentle Memorial Building. Janet White of Troop No. 5 will serve as narrator and Cynthia Buzza of Troop No. 3 will portray Juliette Low, the founder of the Girls Scouts.

    Races — An enthusiastic crowd of 300 attended the fifth annual Model Train Races. The field of 52 contestants was the largest entry in five years. Three first-place winners were announced as follows; Lionel-Diesel, Dennis Guy; Lionel-Steam, Greg Thompson; and Marks and other classifications, Robert Cumming. Second-place winners were; Lionel-Diesel, Mike Lezotte; Lionel-Steam, Gary Byron; and Marks and other classifications, David Rush.

    Appointed — District Attorney John McElwee announced this week that he has appointed Sara O. Burlock of Houlton as Assistant District Attorney for Aroostook County.
    Promotions — John Clark, general manager, has announced the promotion of Ralph Ivey to Office Manager, replacing retired Willard “Bill” Putnam, and the promotion of Carlton Wallace to Lead Lineman, replacing retired Leo Hovey at the Houlton Water Company.
    On the ballot — School Board candidates are Vickie Goodwin, Thornton Peabody and Eric Richards, Jr.
    Community Center — It has been two years since Gloria Swallow and Agnes Folsom purchased the abandoned church on Randall Avenue for the purpose of developing a community youth center. With the assistance of Pastor Peter Beckwith of the First Baptist Church and other interested citizens the center has become a fun and safe place for our youth.
