To the editor:
While watching the current election unfold in our nation I see frustrations coming not just from the left or right but from federal, state, and local governments. Why is this? It is for a number of reasons. Some of the reasons can be controlled, such as corruption, a personal agenda, a lack of devotion, a lack of reason, as well as common sense and the failure to represent constituents. A lot of these things in fact are out of my control, both on the state and national level. However, they are not out of my control on a local level. That is why I have decided to run for selectman for the town of Oakfield.
The first question that was raised as soon as I took out papers was the question of youth. I have been told I was much too young to run for public office. But I ask the readers this, are they satisfied with the current situation that our government — at any level — is in? Have our experienced leaders guided us to some state of utopia? I don’t believe so. That is why I am presenting the people of Oakfield a chance to take a different path, a chance to get youth involved with the decisions being made within the town. I feel my youthfulness will only benefit the town because a different perspective will be presented.
If, as voters, you are still doubting my candidacy allow me to ensure you that I will attack the job with the utmost sense of devotion, energy, and passion. I will not fall victim to the stubbornness and prejudices that often guide town politics. Time has shown that the “same old, same old” way of doing things is no longer working. I assure the voters that I harbor no hidden agenda. My only agenda is to do what is best for the people of Oakfield. Despite being young I am deeply concerned about the future of our town, state, and nation.
Now there are a few issues within the town that I would like to discuss. This particular issue has caused quite an uproar not only locally but statewide and it is that of the windmills being constructed in Oakfield. The decision has been made by the town to allow the turbines and a DEP permit has already been issued. Although an opposing group is expected to file a civil lawsuit and an Army Corps of Engineers permit is needed, it appears the windmills will be constructed. With that being said there will be some money coming into the town in the form of tax revenues and community benefits. One of the reasons that I am running for selectman is to make sure that these funds are used appropriately and that they benefit everyone in the town.
Another issue is the condition of the main road in Oakfield. I have been informed by elected officials of the town that the road will be fixed in the near future. I intend to make sure that this plan is carried out as soon as possible.
March 19 will be election day for Oakfield. This will be an opportunity for a fresh start; voters can elect someone with energy and a devotion to the job who will serve their best interests.
