MONTICELLO – Alton W. Nason 91, passed away peacefully January 31, 2012 at home with his loved ones by his side. He was born January 31, 1921 at Monticello, the son of George Wilmont and Velma Ross Nason.
After serving in the US Army, Alton worked at the Ally Nason mill in Princeton before moving to Houlton in 1943 to work for the Atlas Plywood Corp. Working as an apprentice to his father, he learned how to file, correctly assess problems, gauge and place tension on band, rotary and circular saws. He went to Fryeburg to work in the mill before returning to work for Pinkham Lumber Co. in Ashland.
Upon retirement, Alton moved to his farm in Monticello. There he opened Al’s Saw Shop and became known for his quality workmanship and expert knowledge of saw repair throughout Maine and New Brunswick. Alton grew Christmas trees on his farm and could be seen trimming them in late spring and summer. He drew great enjoyment in knowing his trees would light up hearts and minds of children and adults at Christmas.
In his middle years, he was an avid fisherman. He could be seen wading the brooks and streams of Maine fishing for the elusive trout. In later years, Alton enjoyed attending garage sales and flea markets looking for bargains.
Alton is survived by his wife, Joyce Tapley Nason of Monticello; a daughter, Diane Mann and her companion, John Whynott of Lubec; a son, Richard Nason and his wife, Elaine, of Pittston; step-son Peter Harvey of Monticello; four grandchildren, Sherri Williams and her husband, Bram, of Owensboro, KY, Kim Karam and her husband, Niman, of Bangor, Carey Nason and her husband, Jonathan Johnson, of Bangor, Sandra Nason of Westbrook; seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mavis Czosnek of Presque Isle, Ella Mae Hilton of N. Berwick; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sons Gary and Rodney, the mother of his children, Gladys, second wife, Eldora Nason, five sisters and ten brothers. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
