Eagles continue to grow

    The Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys edged visiting Southern Aroostook, 51-48, last Saturday afternoon in Hodgdon.
    The Eagles have been involved in a few close games.
    “The skill sets are in place,” said Eagles coach Sam Henderson. “The mental toughness and drive to win will come. We are working on it.”

    Micah Wiley led the Eagles with eight first-quarter points, as they built a 16-6 lead over Southern Aroostook, which would be a factor in the game’s outcome. But, Southern Aroostook cut into the lead by halftime, 29-22, behind Pat Goodall and Jesse Boulier’s seven points apiece.
    Coming out in the second half, the teams played evenly, scoring 13 points apiece, with Goodall having six for Southern Aroostook and Ethan Holmes matching him for the Eagles for a, 42-35, GHCA advantage. In the last eight minutes, the Warriors outscored GHCA 13-9, as the Eagles held them off.
    GHCA’s leading scorer was Wiley finishing with 16 points, while Holmes netted 13 and eighth-grader Dana Brown tossing in 10. Capping off the Eagle scoring was Russell Socoby with eight points, while Deyrell Vargas and Josh Winslow each contributed a hoop.
    For Southern Aroostook, Goodall was the game-high scorer with 19 points (10 in the second half), with Boulier netting 15. Vance Gustin and Joe Frazier both had five points and Kaleb Burpee added four.
    It was another battle for the Greater Houlton Christian Academy boys team, as they fell to host Katahdin, 67-64 last Tuesday in Stacyville.
    Everyone contributed for Katahdin, which was led by Wyatt Morse’s 16 points, along with Billy Livezey’s 14 points and nine assists. Jesse McNally and Colton Bivighouse both dropped in 12 points. Braden Cunningham grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 11 points.

    For GHCA, the big three of Wiley, Holmes and Vargas paced their offense. Wiley totaled a game-high 21 points, with Holmes scoring 18 and Vargas adding 14 more.
    In the girls’ game against Southern Aroostook, the Lady Warriors outscored GHCA, 23-8 in the second quarter en route to the 68-37 victory.
    Jess Tucker led the second-quarter surge with seven points, while Katie Goodall, Olivia Raymond and Mataya Hartin each chipped in with four  points apiece.
    The Lady Eagles played a solid third period behind Colby Walker’s five points and Lauren Robertson’s four points, as they were only outscored 16-13, but SACS held a comfortable 51-26 lead.
    Hartin was the game-high scorer with 17 points, while Sable Altvater sunk 16 and Tucker 11 for Southern Aroostook.
    For GHCA, Olivia Lord knocked down 10 points, while Walker added eight.
