HOULTON — Houlton Police responded to a Dec. 20 accident involving a SAD 29 school bus on the North Road near US Cellular shortly after 2 p.m..
Jefferson Graham, 40, of Ashland was stopped on the North Road preparing to make a left-hand turn into Doc’s Place when his vehicle was rear ended by a 2008 bus being operated by Larry McAfee, 49, of Littleton.
According to Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin, McAfee reported that he glanced in his mirror to look at the back of the bus and when he looked back at the roadway, he was unable to stop. McAfee struck Graham who was operating a 2005 Honda.
SAD 29 Superintendent Mike Hammer said McAfee has been with the district since 2000.
“He followed the district protocol, which is first checking to see if the kids were OK, calling 9-1-1 and notifying the transportation supervisor and this office,” Hammer said.
Three students were on the bus. No injuries were reported. The police report indicated glare from the sun may have also been a factor. The ages of the children were 4, 7 and 8. Hammer said he also checked on the students.
There are no charges pending in the accident, Asselin said. Damage amounts were not listed in the police report. Hammer said there was no damage to the school bus.
Officer Zeke Collins investigated the accident.
