Students ‘clean up’

Recently 11 students from the Danforth and Brookton area took part in a day-long cleaning project on Baskahegan Lake. Sites that were cleaned include the landing, Long and Round Islands, Ant Island, Abbraquidassat Point, Norway Point, Ship Island and Elliot Gut.
Five boat loads of trash were hauled off the sites. Round Island was targeted for upgrading with the fire pits being cleaned and rebuilt, and blow downs cut into firewood and stacked.

In the spring a new fiberglass outbox (placed over a dug hole for human waste) and three new picnic tables will be placed on Round Island. The teens are hoping that those who use the sites will show an appreciation for the work they are doing by practicing a carry in, carry out policy and leaving the sites better then they found them.
While funding is available for one outbox and three picnic tables, those who would like to contribute to help purchase additional picnic tables and fiberglass outboxes can contact Dave Conley at 448-2743. Conley will be working to secure a grant for Brookton-area students to visit the numerous lake sites for cleaning and maintenance on a bi-weekly basis throughout the 2012 season.
