To the editor:
In 2007, the Maine Department of Transportation notified the town of Dyer Brook that the Dyer Brook rest area on Route 2 would be permanently closed. The Department felt that this rest area was close enough to town that is was unnecessary. The state of Maine issued a statement to the town that this facility did not have a scenic view, did not have a walking trail and was not situated on a lake or stream. Still, the picnic area remained very busy during the time since it was closed by the state.
We have been very fortunate to have residents in town volunteer to clean the rest area and mow the lawns since then. Our gratitude goes out to those residents.
Recently you may have noticed a change in the picnic area. Our dedicated residents have donated paint and materials to the site and all the tables, canopies and signs have been painted. Dead trees and wood have been removed. Thank you to Cathy and Dale, Judy, Richard, Hazel, Mike and Diane, Chip and Vern and anyone else that assisted in keeping this rest area clean and respectful.
So, if you have used the picnic area in Dyer Brook, please keep in mind that this is maintained by volunteers. Please carry in and carry out all trash. And if you would like to help support future improvements to the picnic area, donate for signs, new grills, etc., please stop by the Dyer Brook Town Office and offer your support. Thank you.
Florence Hardy,
town manager
