Use care when posting your personal information
The Houlton Police Department will pick up unused medications at households where a loved one has passed away due to a terminal illness. All too often, thieves or those with dependency issues will enter a home knowing that there are unused narcotics present in the household.
Criminals will read the obituaries to determine when people will not be at home. There are opportunists who pick up a newspaper, read the obituaries and try to take advantage of the situation while you are not home.
HPD cautions everyone about disclosing causes of death in obituaries or posting in lieu of flowers, people can make a memorial contribution in the deceased’s honor to a cancer foundation/ organization.
Be careful what you post on social networking sites and before leaving home to attend a funeral, secure all windows and doors. Funerals and other life changes can make the daily routine of securing a homestead become disrupted.
For more information about having your old medication picked up, call the Houlton Police Department at 207-532-2287, and ask to speak with Chief Butch Asselin or Lt. Dan Pelletier
Also: HPD is now accepting unused sharpies, such as hypodermic needles. So along with old and unwanted medication, you can bring in your unused sharpies 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the Houlton Police Deptartment.
