The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety launched a two-week seatbelt enforcement effort, following a press conference last Saturday on the front lawn of the Maine Department of Public Safety in Augusta.    “Director Lauren Stewart and representatives from several police departments talked about the effort which began May 19 and runs through June 1. The ‘Click It or Ticket It’ campaign is part of a national effort sponsored by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and this is the fifth consecutive year that Maine police agencies have teamed up to convince motorists to use their seatbelts,” said Stephen McCausland, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
McCausland said the campaign “also coincides with many police department’s traffic safety efforts surrounding Memorial Day. Police departments taking part in Aroostook County include: Ashland, Caribou, Houlton, Limestone and Presque Isle.
The Presque Isle Police Department has already begun seatbelt checks, during details in recent weeks.
“We’ve done some random details recently throughout the community, addressing various issues, including speed and seatbelt use,” said Sgt. Joey Seeley. “Those efforts will continue in weeks ahead.”
