100 Years Ago-Oct. 18, 1911
Aroostook Times

    The Times — Work on the foundation for the new Times block was completed Monday and laying brick is progressing well.
    New employees — Miss Camilla Woodworth, Miss Etta Rideout, Mrs. Frank Jones and Mrs. Henry Drillen of Houlton,  and the Misses Capitolla and Bertha Kilgore of Smyrna Mills have accepted positions as sales ladies with G.W. Richards & Co.
    Linneus — Olen and Roy Adams went hunting last week and brought back a large bear.
    Ludlow — A large flock of wild geese alighted in Mr. F.L. Small’s field on Monday morning and some good marksmen started after them, but missed as usual.

    Storm — Low temperatures, driving wind, hail and snow were Southern Aroostook’s portions of the miniature tornado which swept through the entire state of Maine.
    Close call — Fire caused by the spilling of a pan of burning fat in Tingley’s Bakery swept through the cellar and first floor of the Heywood Apartment block on Court Street. Harold Texido carried his infant child from the building and other occupants carried as much of their property as they could to the street.

bs-fromfiles36-dc-pt-42NEW QUEEN — Miss Eleanora Edwards, 19 of Houlton was picked recently as Maine’s 1936 Potato Queen. She is the daughter of Mrs. Celia Edwards.

    East Hodgdon — The young people of this place gave the school teachers, Miss Robinson, Miss Small and Miss Decrow, a get-acquainted party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Grant.
    Stag party — Donald Dunn hosted a “stag party” for Dwight Webber in honor of his approaching marriage. Following a steak supper with all the fixin’s cards were enjoyed. Those present beside the host and guest of honor were, Fred Donald, George McGillicuddy, George Roach, Gordon Clark, Donald McCluskey, Tom Vose, Dr. Whitney, Leonard McNair, Melbourne Moir, Fred Purington, George Benson and Burpee Berry. Mr. Webber received a smoking set and an end table.

    Storm — A sneak storm in the middle of October caught all unprepared here and elsewhere in northern Maine, dumping six inches of wet, heavy snow.
    New manager — Ernest English of St. John, N.B. has been named manager of the Northland Hotel. He replaces George Hannigan who recently resigned according to Alan H. Clark, head of the Northland Corporation.
    Caribou — Mrs. Ida Harrington, Republican legislator from Patten is readying a bill for introduction to the Special Session of the 100th Legislature which would authorize the trading of 50 partridge for 10 caribou to be stocked in the Klondike Region of Baxter State Park.
    Senior play — Students selected for parts in the three-act play, “Charley’s Aunt”, at Ricker Classical Institute are, Vernon Hersey, Wallace Gardiner, Dallas Henderson, Gary Cheney, William Roach, Lucien Plourde, Sonia Grant, Pamela Putnam, Susan Rich and Patty Hutchinson.

    New doctor — Robert I. Mosenfelder, M.D., native of Escanaba, Michigan has joined the Houlton Regional Hospital medical staff as an obstetrician and gynecologist.
    Joins law firm — The Law Offices of Severson, Hand and Nelson, Market Square in Houlton have announced that Sara O. Burlock is now associated in the practice of law with the firm.
    Concert — The “New Christy Minstrels” will present a concert at Houlton High School Auditorium to kick off the Community Concert season.
