Bridgewater, A Happening Place
By Jann Bonkowski Votaw

There are only a few more weeks to come and enjoy the sounds of “Outside In” at the Bridgewater Historical Hall on Main Road in Bridgewater. It all happens on Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. Put your dancing shoes on and come on out and boogie!
Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14-15 there will be a multi-family Indoor Yard Sale at the Bridgewater Historical Hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A wide variety of items will be available, fishing gear, knives (military, hunting, etc), golf equipment, knick knacks, clothing, etc. Too much to list. Come on down and get some goodies.
On Oct. 29, the BHA will hold its annual adult Halloween Dance from 7-11 p.m. The band “Outside In” will perform. There will be door prizes, costume prizes, and good eats. This year we are going to hold a pumpkin decorating contest. Entry fee for this contest is $2. The winner will get 50 percent of that pot, and two extra chances on the regular 50/50. More than one entry is allowed. So get your imagination in gear and carve or decorate away. May the best pumpkin win!
There will be three categories for the costume contest, Best, Most Original, and the Scariest. Tickets are $6 for anyone in costume and $8 for those who choose not to join in the fun of getting dressed up. Last year there were only three who didn’t come in costume. Hopefully we’ll get 100 percent participation this year. Come prepared to have a blast! All proceeds go towards hall supplies and maintenance. For more information, call 425-7901.

Houlton Council of Catholic Women
by Lois Downing

Houlton Council of Catholic Women met in the living room at St. Anthony’s Hall for its October meeting, Monday, Oct. 3. Sixteen members were present including the Rev. David Raymond, moderator, with guests Makayla McGuire, Sarah Casey and her daughter Amira.
Both co-presidents were in attendance, Janet Barker and Mary Armour. Mary received notice the Maine Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will meet in Waterville Saturday, October 22. If you would like to attend, please see either of the co-presidents.
Mary also noted that envelopes for discarding prescriptions to be disposed of are still available. The subject of new booklets was discussed. Present booklets will be used, deleting and omitting new names and telephone numbers. Purchasing new booklets will be considered at a later date.
Co-president Mary showed the group a picture of a piano that is for sale and donated to Council. The piano will be displayed at the annual rummage sale along with a couch.
Janet then took over the meeting and made plans for the rummage sale. Sheets were distributed for volunteers for the three days and more. The date for the annual Christmas sale will be December 3, as noted by Molly Bailey, chairman. A separate table will be set up for new items, too valuable for other sales.
Father Dave thanked the Council for their spiriit in the rummage sale. He thanked the entire parish and all volunteers and the Council received a special blessing for their good work.
Sunday, Nov. 13, the Knights of Columbus, local Council, will host a luncheon after the 11 a.m. Mass. Featured will be Commissions Awareness booths. Each of the commissions will sponsor a booth to relay information about the particular commission’s role in the church.
A donation was given to the youth to attend the Journey Retreat Nov. 4 and 5. The co-presidents reported that Faith Formation will host a pancake breakfast after the 8 o’clock Mass Sunday, October 16. All are encouraged to attend.
Prayer intentions were gathered for many parishioners and non-parishioners and a decade of the Rosary was recited in their honor. Birthdays and anniversaries were recognized among the members. Janet Barker won the door prize. Luncheon followed the meeting, provided by the October committee.

Ricker Rumblings
by Lois Downing

Here I am again. If you missed Rumblings for a few weeks, it’s because I have been under the weather and lost a couple weeks. I’m on the mend now and here goes! Beautiful Sunday here as I am writing. It must be in the 70s, as it was Saturday, October 8th. Halloween decor and trimmings are beginning to show around here. One door on the third floor is decorated nicely.
Dorothy Weston had a birthday a few weeks ago. She is still in her 90s and was given a crash of cards. Happy Birthday to Dot and many more to come. The swing outside and the two swings on the lawn are still occupied when the weather is good. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon.
Tom and Rita Krohenberger of Watertown, Connecticut were Thursday visitors of their cousin, Lois Downing. Tom and Rita come to Maine every fall and occupy their cottage in Topsfield. Kathy Hall was a recent visitor of her mother, Lois Downing. Jeff Thibodeau made another visit to the office and was here a little longer this time. Nice to see Jeff.
If you see Barbara Spellman, wish her a Happy Birthday. It may be late since her birthday is October 10 but better late than never! A music group was in attendance Saturday, October 8 in the community room. The people who attended had a good time. See you later and I hope to be back next week. Keep well and celebrate life!

Island Falls News

Recent guests of Susan York has been her son, Carrol Bates and wife, Nicole and their two children, daughter Ora and son Carrol  Bates, III, from Glenburn. While here, they visited with friends and relatives in the area  and plan to return soon for another visit.      Cheryl Sewall Connelly and husband, Peter, have been enjoying the recent warm weather at the Sewall camp on lower Mattawamkeag Lake and will soon be closing the camp for the coming winter.  Have heard from Richard and Claudette DeLong, former residents who now live in Florida, and they are doing well, enjoying the balmy weather there. Have been out with my leaf catcher once so far and plan to wait awhile before doing more as the leaves are still mostly on. By the middle of October they will be falling faster and will keep me busy then. Lots of apples have fallen off the tree by the end of my driveway but I still havent seen any deer around to feast on them. I go out every couple of days to kick them into the grass so I won’t run over them and make a squashy mess. On Sept. 27, I was very happy to look out my back window about 5:00 p.m. and there were two yearling deer grazing away on the green grass. They were not there long, tho, and so far, have not returned – as I have kept a sharp eye out. Am hoping they will return before too long. Will be putting out birdseed again soon as the weather is getting chilly again and I miss seeing the birds around.

Sherman Seniors meet

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, the Sherman Senior Citizens Club met for lunch at the Sherman Gym with only a few of the regular members attending. The group enjoyed a delicious variety of potluck entrees and some Beano games. It is always an enjoyable time together.
Terese brought her daughter, Bonnie Stratten, who was visiting from her home in Florida. Others present were: Eva Perry, Bonita Staples, Linniea Perry, Frances Gorman, Esther Greenier, and Annie Atkinson. Fred was absent because he was in the hospital. We sent him a card wishing him to get well.
Our next meeting will be on Nov. 2 and our Thanksgiving Dinner will be on Nov. 16, with no October meeting.
The group drove to Houlton on Oct. 10 to have lunch at the Elm Tree Diner. Hope you have remembered that we talked about this at our last meeting. No meeting scheduled for Oct. 19.
