High school soccer season coming to a close

    As the harvest breaks come to a close, games for the local soccer season are winding down as playoffs are right around the corner.
    Last Thursday’s action saw the East Grand varsity soccer teams hosting Southern Aroostook.
    In the boys’ game, the Warriors blanked the Vikings, 7-0, behind Cody Lassonde’s three goals and assist. Pat Goodall scored twice and added an assist, while Taylor Locke and Cameron Landry both added a single tally. The Warriors’ goalie, Will McGary, had five saves against six shots, as the Warriors improve to 6-3-1.
    For East Grand, 0-6, Alex Brittain turned back 18 of 29 shots faced in the goal.
    Southern Aroostook edged East Grand, 2-1, in girls’ soccer action in Danforth last Thursday.

    Olivia Raymond provided the winning goal 10 minutes into second half action, while Desirae Dubois tallied a first-half goal. Goalie Mallory Lawlor had 15 saves on 17 shots faced.
    For East Grand, Shaunna Beaudoin scored on a Lauren Morse assist in the first half. Goalie Jayne Cousins set aside 21 of 24 shots.
    Last Wednesday, the visiting Penobscot Valley Howlers narrowly defeated the Southern Aroostook girls, 2-1.
    Both PVHS goals were scored in the first half in a 12-minute span by Meghan King. The Howlers are 6-0 and goalie Jocelyn Thomas had seven saves in the game.

    For SACS, Katie Goodall scored an unassisted goal just 1:23 into the game, as the Lady Warriors took a 1-0 lead. Goalie Lawlor stopped six of eight shots faced.
    The Houlton varsity boys soccer team blanked visiting Lee, 4-0, last Wednesday behind Nick Guiod’s two first-half goals, assisted by Kyle Bouchard and Dan Swallow. The Shires’ Jordan Russell tallied a goal, assisted by Guiod and Brandon Ward had an unassisted goal for the 6-2 Shires.
    Houlton goalie Kole Buzzeo made four saves on five shot attempts, while Lee’s Brett Doane had six saves on 11 shots for the 6-2 Pandas.

    In girls’ action last Wednesday, the Lady Shires shut out Lee, 2-0, on Alana Pratt’s two goals. Amanda Fogarty added an assist, while goalie Marina Cameron handled all three shots on goal. Houlton is now 4-3-1.
    At East Millinocket last Wednesday, the Katahdin Cougars were defeated 4-0.
    Katahdin netkeeper Jesse McNally stopped 16 of 25 shots for the 1-8 Cougars.
    Last Tuesday in Hodgdon, the Southern Aroostook Warriors raced to a 5-0 win keyed by Goodall’s hat trick. Landry and Lassonde each scored in the game, with Joe Frazier picking up an assist. Goalie Jesse Boulier had seven saves.
    For Hodgdon, Chris Hudson was between the posts and came up with 22 saves.
    On the girls’ field last Tuesday, Southern Aroostook dominated Hodgdon, 11-0.
    Jillian Diaferio led the Lady Warriors with four goals and Beth Bishop scored two more. Dubois, Raymond, Katie Prescott, Kylie Dunphy and Kassidy Lyons all scored a tally. Goalie Lawlor stopped two shots.
    For Hodgdon, combining in goal, Amanda Clark and Jamie Theriault had 11 saves for the winless Lady Hawks.
Playoff dates:
    The preliminary round for boys is Saturday, Oct. 22, with quarterfinals on Wednesday, Oct. 26; semifinals, Saturday, Oct. 29 and the regional finals, Wednesday, Nov. 2.
    The girls’ preliminary games will be played Friday, Oct. 21 with the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 25; semifinals, Friday, Oct. 28 and regional finals on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
    The high school state soccer championship is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 5.
