Potluck supper and game night
By Jann Bonkowski Votaw
BRIDGEWATER, Maine — The Bridgewater Historical Association would like to invite everyone to a Pot Luck Supper and Game Night on Friday Sept. 16, at 6 p.m. at their hall on Main Street in Bridgewater. Bring enough food to share with others and we will have a bunch of different games to play (Scrabble, Pit, Clue, Trivia, etc.) We look forward to seeing you there.
Don’t forget, there is music by, “OUTSIDE IN” on Thursday nights from 6-9 p.m. It is a night of fun and dancing. We will be holding a yard sale at the end of the month with a final one for the year next month. In October we will be holding a Bridgewater style silent auction.
We are hoping to have the folks from Northeast Archeological Research Company come to the hall and do a presentation of what was found at the border dig. We will keep you posted on this and all of our events.
Last but not least, we will be holding our Halloween Dance at the end of October so get your costumes ready. Last year we had almost 100 percent in costumes. Maybe this year we will get everyone to come in costume.
Come out and have a good time at the BHA Hall. For more information, call 425-7901.
Ricker Rumblings

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a great week with celebrating Labor Day with family and friends and if not, hope it was one you liked anyway.
Ah, 9/11 memorials. We had one at St. Mary of the Visitation and did many other churches. Do you remember what you were doing on that date? I do—was at the local hospital for some reason and was told what was going on at that time. When I came home, I remember telling Muriel (Thibodeau) who was working here at that time. I remember that well. Let us pray for all those who survived as well as those who died.
Bill and Frances Dunn of Spring Street spent several days last week in Salem and Peabody, MA visiting friends and relatives. Paul and Jean Armstrong were in Bangor on Thursday for a doctor’s appointment.
Carmen Chasse informed me of her granddaughter’s McKenzie’s surgery on Saturday. McKenzie had an accident here several years ago and the recent surgery was the result. God bless, McKenzie.
“Understanding dementia” is the title of the program at Friendly Visitors and training September 28 at Smoki Hauler Snowmobile Club in Oakfield. If you know someone interested in becoming an RSVP volunteer doing friendly visits in homes, feel free to bring her/him with you. You can call 764-3396 if you need more information.
We had fun last Wednesday with the two people representing the University of Maine Cooperative Extension sponsored the cooking class in the community room. Tortillas were on the menu — with beans, avocados, tomatoes, peppers and other ingredients. We all had our share and samples and ended up with a game of Bingo. It was a fun time. Attending were Joyce Miller, Shirley Nason, Sylvia Thompson, Dale DeVoe, Lois Downing, Connie Barry, Lavina Byron, Macie Fowler, Jeanie and Paul Armstrong. Next week the program subject is diabetes. Come and enjoy.
Maureen Friel of Cary celebrated her birthday on Sept. 11. Happy Birthday, Maureen, and many more to come! Maureen’s sister, Peggy Robinson, lives at Ricker. Sylvia and Donnie Thompson celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on Wednesday. They dined out and had a nice day together.
Sympathy is extended to the friends of John McGary, who died Sept. 10. John will be missed and our sympathy goes out to all who knew him. To the angels — light my path, direct my steps, shelter me under your protective wings.
The weather continues to be favorable with a nip of fall in the air, but then it is September and school is in session. God bless everyone and have a wonderful and safe week.

I recently heard from former resident, Clayton Varney, that he and his wife arrived safely in Humble, Texas, where they will reside with their daughter and family. And despite rainy, cool weather, the Country Jamboree, held every Wednesday at the snowmobile clubhouse, has been held and enjoyed by all who attend. Good music and good singing helps keep your spirits up, plus the fun of chatting with friends.
I have been doing the mowing between showers and have found that an army of skunks have been hard at it digging holes all over everywhere. Have given up trying to fill them all too much work to try that. Still have the female hummingbirds around at the feeder but they will soon be gone. Then it will be time to feed the other birds that arrive for their fall meals. Am still hoping that some deer will arrive to eat up all the fallen apples that are plentiful. Several people have told me that their gardens were eaten by the deer – maybe that’s where they all went – to eat all those gardens!
Oakfield News
A total of 26 members and one guest met at the Smoki-hauler snowmobile club for their first meeting in September. The blessing was said we had a good lunch and fellowship time where we talked and enjoyed getting together with friends.
After lunch, we had the Lord’s Prayer and the flag salute. The treasurer’s report was given and accepted. Wanetta Townsend gave the card report. There was no secretary’s report. The last meeting we went to Mantle Lake park in Presque Isle for a picnic and went shopping in the mall. At the next meeting we will decide where to go on the fall trip.

If you would like to do some volunteering, please call Bonny at 757-3396.Bonny can use all the help she can get and it will make you fell good by doing good.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly ME 0233, Houlton
by Lois Downing
Take Off Pounds Sensibly £0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, Sept. 9 meeting.
Sixteen members were present, six of these members being KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). In the absence of leader Denise Clark, Diane Folsom took charge of the meeting. Charlotte Marley presented the program. Loser of the week was Joanne Scott with Lois Downing as runner-up. The skinny dish was taken home by Gerry McAfee.
Diane read a letter from our representative, Janice Cote. The program as presented by Charlotte was on portion control. She had a bucket containing a golf ball, a tennis ball, a baseball, a shot glass, bar of soap, Scrabble tile, computer mouse, a baseball, ping-pong ball, ice cream scoop, a mayo jar lid, a Yo-Yo, deck of cards and a checkbook. The list contained cereal, salad dressing, nuts cheese, hamburger, peanut butter, 3 ounces of beef, 1/2 cup rice, one potato, dinner roll, 1 tsp. butter, 1 cup fruit, cooked pasta, 3 ounce fish, 3 ounce poultry. We checked each article off with the correct article. The portion size, for example, of a baseball was to equal 1/2 cup of rice. It was very enlightening.
The next meeting will be Sept. 16 at the same location. If you need more information on the chapter, you may call Charlotte Marley at 757-8483 or Betty Ivey at 532-9653. Weigh-in is at 8:00-8:45 a.m. every Friday. The meeting starts at 9 o’clock and usually ends an hour later. Come and enjoy and take off your extra weight.
