100 Years Ago-Aug. 30, 1911
Aroostook Times
    B&A — The General Electric Company have sent from their works at Schenectady, N.Y. to the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad Company a gasoline-electric railroad motor car for transportation of passengers. This is the first car of the kind ever sent into any of the New England states and is almost an innovation anywhere in the United States. The businessmen of Houlton tendered the car for a trip to various points north and will report on their trip next week.

    Houlton — Mr. and Mrs. Walter McPartland and daughter Carmel of New York City were guests in town last week of the former’s brother Frank McPartland and family, Water Street and Mr. and Mrs. Edmund McPartland.
    Temple Theatre — Playing at the theatre this week is the “Last of the Mohicans.” Three shows daily; 2:30, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. matinees, 25 cents, evenings, 35 cents, and children, 10 cents.
    Salesman — Floyd M. Haskell, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Haskell, has recently become connected with the office of A.L. Robinson, securities broker, in a selling capacity. Mr. Haskell will sell stocks and bonds in Houlton and surrounding localities.

    Bar Harbor — A Houlton teenager who plans to become a doctor got a head start on her career by doing biological research in Bar Harbor. Jane Warman, 16, daughter of Clyde Warman, has been attending the Jackson Memorial Laboratory Summer Training Session. Warman attends Ricker Classical Institute.
    Bridgewater — The wind blew, the rain fell and the ice came down in Bridgewater Monday afternoon and before the official rain fall of 1.9 inches was measured, nearly $100,000 in damages was recorded to potato fields, oat stands, home gardens and to hundreds of windows. Jagged pieces of ice, measuring up to four inches in width and as clear as glass plummeted to the ground during the quarter hour storm accompanied by 65 mph winds.
    Furniture store — Paul A. McGillicuddy for the past 15 years distributor for Socony Mobil products and General Electric appliances and heating plants, opened Aroostook’s newest furniture store on Water Street. It is called McGillicuddy’s House of Fine Furniture.

    Closing — Albro and Marion Cowperthwaite of the Parkview Terrace have announced plans to cease serving food after having been in the restaurant business since 1941.
    Thompson Brothers —After the war in 1946, three brothers, Vaughn, Ralph and Lester decided to build a garage and start with a service station. They carried Shell products and are celebrating 40 years in business on the Bangor Road.
    H.R.H. — Houlton Regional Hospital is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated entrance and lobby area.
    Littleton — Al and Ruth Ewings have formed a new firm in Littleton; the Ewings Fiberglass Products Co. Popular items are steps, docks, patio benches and ramp-ways.
