HOULTON – Arlene Mary (Foley) Friel – 92, went to be with the Lord August 28, 2011 at her home, surrounded by family and friends. She was born July 11, 1919 in Trescott, the daughter of Vincent and Delia (Murray) Foley.
Arlene graduated from Lubec High School in 1937 and received her R.N. training at Queen’s Hospital, Portland in 1940. She married Karl Clark Friel on May 3, 1942. Nursing was her life long vocation. She practiced in a wide range of positions; industrial nurse, camp nurse, home health, long term care and hospitals. She was an active member of National Right to Life, RSVP, Meals for Me and St. Mary’s Church. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, reading and being of assistance to her neighbors at Ricker Plaza, where she was an original resident. Her children will always remember her most important “job” as being a praying mother.
She is survived by four children, K. Patrick Friel of Stuart, FL, Maureen Friel of Cary, Kathleen Perez of Kansas City, MO and Peggy Robinson of Houlton; 13 grand-children; 10 great-grand-children; one great-great grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, son, Dennis E. Friel in April 2011, 2 brothers, Maurice Foley in September 2002 and James Foley in February 2009.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31 at Bowers Funeral Home, 10 Water Street, Houlton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Mary’s of the Visitation, Houlton with a reception immediately following. Interment will be in the Smyrna Mills Cemetery.
