HOULTON, Maine — The town of Houlton is looking for a few good individuals to serve on the Town Council, SAD 29 school board, Board of Budget Review, Cary Library trustees or Houlton Water Company board of directors.
According to Houlton Town Clerk Cathy O’Leary, nomination papers are now available for a number of open seats. Up for grabs are three three-year terms on the Houlton Town Council; a one-year term on the council; three three-year seats for the SAD 29 school board; three three-year terms for the town’s Board of Budget Review; two three-year terms on the Houlton Water Company board of directors; and one five-year term on the Cary Library board of trustees.
O’Leary said several individuals have taken out nomination forms for the council and school board spots, but so far, there has been no interest in the library seat.
The three-year seats on the council currently belong to Walter Goodrich, Sue Tortello and Brian Donnelly, while the one-year term is an unexpired term currently held by Michael Jenkins. At least two of those councilors — Tortello and Jenkins — have expressed interest in serving another term by taking out nomination forms.
Donnelly told the Houlton Pioneer Times Tuesday afternoon that he was not seeking another term on the council due to a busy work schedule.
For the SAD 29 school board, the three terms that are expiring belong to Liz Anderson, Cynthia Hillman-Forbush and Paul Cleary. Hillman-Forbush and Cleary have taken out nomination papers for the school board. Cleary, a former council chairman who was termed out in 2009, has also taken out forms for the town council. Attempts to reach Anderson for confirmation on her intentions to run again were not successful.
The three seats on the Board of Budget Review currently belong to Rick Kelly, Mitch Holmes and Jerry Berthelette. The two seats on the Houlton Water Company board of directors belong to Rick Goodwin and Galen Hogan. The Library Trustee seat belongs to Gary Hagan.
Nomination papers must be returned to the town office by 4 p.m. Sept. 16.
