MONTICELLO – Mary-Lou Grass, 78, wife of John (“Jack”) A. Grass, died August 11, 2011 at a local hospital. She was born November 23, 1932, in Newport, the youngest daughter of George H. and Viola (Watson) Davis.
Mary-Lou graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1951. That year she married Jack and moved to Monticello, where she was a homemaker and “right-hand man” on the potato farm they shared. Mary-Lou was a ballot clerk in Monticello for more than 20 years. She was an avid outdoorswoman and enjoyed hunting and fishing from the camp she and Jack shared with their family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, who knew her as “Nana” and with her great-grandchildren, who knew her as “Nee”. She spent many hours knitting mittens and baby blankets for those children and always had a treat to share when they came to visit. Mary-Lou was a life-long Celtics fan and enjoyed watching the games on TV.
In addition to her parents, Mary-Lou was predeceased by her sister, Maureen Cianchette and her husband, Carl of Pittsfield; her brother Elliot Davis of Sanford, Florida; and her brother-in-law, Luther Grass of Monticello.
In addition to her husband of sixty years, she is survived by a brother, Neil Davis and wife Lena, of Sangerville; her three children, Lona Grass Sewell and her husband, Gary, of Monticello, Laurice Grass-Bell of Monticello, and Lawrence Grass and his partner, Joyce, of Omaha, Nebraska; her grandchildren, Keri Sewell Seitz and her husband, Mark, of Brunswick, Kelli Sewell Beaulieu and her husband, Chris, of Presque Isle, John Sewell and his wife, Jody Pelkey, of Princeton, Brian Anthony Bell of Tuscon, Arizona; Nathan Grass of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jessica Grass of Arlington, Massachusetts; Cynthia Bell of Concord, New Hampshire; Chris Bell and his wife, Meredith, of New Boston, New Hampshire; Anthony Grass of Cincinnati, Ohio and Matthew Grass of Omaha, Nebraska; her great-grandchildren, Thomas and Caitlin Seitz; Jack, Sam and Ben Beaulieu; Cyrus and Nolan Sewell; Thomas and Michael Grass; Breslin & Jadin Bell; Parker, Mariah, Evan and Amber Bell; her in-laws, Rose Davis of Sanford, Florida; Norman Grass and his partner, Paula Smith of Littleton; Kay Grass of Monticello; Joanne & Ray Dingman of Gaines, Pennsylvania; Pearl & Robert London of Hodgdon and Robert and Roberta Grass of New Hall, California.
Friends and family were invited to visit 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday, August 15, at Dunn Funeral Home, 11 Park Street Houlton. A service followed the visiting hours and after the service there was a gathering at the home of Lona & Gary Sewell, 262 Lake Road, Monticello.
