Over $85,500 given in scholarships at Houlton High School
Senior Last Chapel was held at Houlton High School on May 31. After the seniors marched in accompanied by faculty members, Tanner Caron, senior class president, welcomed parents and guests. Danika Fitzpatrick, junior class president, gave the Underclass Farewell to the seniors.
More than $85,500 in scholarships was awarded during the evening. This amount included $35,000 from Dollars for Scholars and $50,550 from the Alumni Association. The Logan DeWitt Memorial Scholarship was presented to Katherine Cone; the Joleen Fitzpatrick Raymond Memorial Scholarship went to Ashton Carmichael and the Aimee Fitzpatrick Memorial Scholarship went to Sarah Verville. Elks Memorial scholarships were presented to Tyler Delano, Ian Gervais, Katherine Cone, Ian Crane, Patrick Graham, Logan Shaffer and Alishia Ledger. The J. Thomas and Margaret Fitzpatrick Scholarship went to Katherine Cone; the Tyson Ford Perry Memorial Scholarships to Wyatt Jenkins and Gaige Flewelling; Ricker Scholarships were presented to Marina DiMarco, Tyler Delano, Tanner Caron, Gaige Flewelling, Kelsey Fitzpatrick and Alexis Rush.
Kaylyn Queen received the Houlton Regional Medical Staff Scholarship, Ashton Carmichael the Anthony DeLucca Memorial Scholarship, Logan Nason the Good Farms Scholarship and Taylor Bailey, Katherine Cone, Gaige Flewelling and Ben Ward the Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation Scholarships. The Bridge to Hope Scholarship went to Micah Goetsch, and the Christopher Hiscoe Memorial to Wyatt Jenkins. Certificate of Achievement Awards were presented to Rebekah Taylor, David Palmer and Joseph Gould. Chelsi Murray and Tyler Delano received the Michael Clark Honorarium. Alexis Rush received the Joseph Dobbins Social Studies Award and Chelsi Murray the United States Academic Science Achievement Award. The Prudential Spirit of the Community Awards went to Ian Crane and Tyler Delano, the Judith Oliver Outstanding Female Athlete Award went to Taylor Bailey and the Willie Varney Outstanding Male Athlete Award to Ian Gervais. Ben Ward received a Special Recognition Award for outstanding performance on the Houlton-Hodgdon Black Hawks hockey team.
Marina DiMarco received the Mildred Rutledge English Award and Civil Rights Team certificates went to MaryAnn Silliboy, Julia Ouellete, Kaylyn Queen and Shawn West. Houlton Rotary Club Scholarships went to Tyler Delano, Alexis Rush, Dylan Gard, Ian Gervais, Rachael Torres, Brian Tuttle, Edward Flint, Michael Ring, Desiree Deprey and MaryAnn Silliboy.

The Thomas Matthews Memorial Scholarship went to Nicholas Chase and the NMCC Presidential Achievement Award was presented to Edward Flint. Kassandra Reeves received the Early College for ME Scholarship, Sarah Verville the Machias Savings Bank Scholarship and the 4H Leadership Award. Marcy Hernandez received the Bank of Maine Scholarship, the Knights of Columbus, and Women in Business of Greater Houlton Scholarships. Ben Ward and Katherine Cone received the Katahdin Valley Health Services Scholarships. Ben also received the Gary and Margaret Hagan Scholarship. Katherine also received the Houlton Police Department Scholarship and, along with Megan Gerath, the County Federal Credit Union Scholarship. Marina DiMarco received the Senator George Mitchell Scholarship.
Ashton Carmichael received the MELMAC Principal’s Scholarship. Marina DiMarco was presented with the MPA Principal’s Award. Gaige Flewelling received the DAR Good Citizenship Award and the Excellence in Technology Awards went to Benjamin Ward and Caleb Black. Academic Decathlon Awards went to Craig Thomas, Kaylyn Queen, Rachael Torres, Kelsey Fitzpatrick, Shawn West, Ashton Carmichael and Tyler Delano.
Class officer certificates went to Class president Tanner Caron and Vice-Presidents Tyler Delano, Marina DiMarco, Rachael Torres, Marcy Hernandez and Benjamin Ward. Ian Gervais and Rebecca Crandall received Dollars for Scholars Committee Awards.

Josh Bickford and Timothy Chase received certificates for perfect attendance and Josh Bickford, Tyler Delano, Gaige Flewelling and Megan Gerath received recognition for Third Quarter Principal’s Honor Roll. Honor medals were presented to Valedictorian Marina DiMarco, Salutatorian Tyler Delano, First Honor Essayist Tanner Caron and Second Honor Essayist Gaige Flewelling.

Moore named to MMA Dean’s List
CASTINE — Kaleb Moore of Sherman was recently named to the Dean’s List at Maine Maritime Academy for outstanding academic achievement in the second semester of the 2010-2011 academic year. Students named to the Dean’s List earn a grade point average of 3.3 or above on a 4.0 scale Moore, a member of the class of 2014, is majoring in Marine Engineering Technology. He is a graduate of Katahdin High School.
University announces 2011 graduates
PRESQUE ISLE — Two hundred and thirty-four students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle during the 2010-2011 academic year. On Saturday, May 14, during the 2010 Commencement Exercises, the University’s 102nd Commencement, President Donald Zillman conferred degrees upon 136 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.
Graduating summa cum laude (3.900 accumulative average and above) were: Sarah Ryan, Ludlow; and Tonya Corriveau, Patten.
From New Brunswick, Canada, was: Michelle Byrne, Woodstock.
Graduating magna cum laude (3.700 – 3.899 accumulative average) from New Brunswick, Canada was Kristina Parkinson, Woodstock.

Freeman graduates
Robin (Sattler) Freeman recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a master’s degree in music in choral conducting from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. While a student, Freeman was employed as an associate instructor and worked with the Symphonic Choir, Singing Hoosiers, Indiana University Children’s Choir, University Singers and Oratorio Chorus.
She is a 2002 graduate of Houlton High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Gordon College in 2006. She is the daughter of Rick and Karen Sattler of Linneus and currently lives in Crestwood, N.Y. with her husband, Evan. She is employed in the advancement department of St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Seminary as their annual gifts officer, while her husband pursues a doctorate degree.
U-Maine Orono dean’s list
ORONO — The University of Maine recognized 1,938 students for achieving Deans List honors in the Spring 2011 semester. Of the students who made the Deans List, 1,669 are from Maine, 200 are from out of state, and 69 are from foreign countries.

Matthew Olsson received the George A. Violette Memorial Scholarship of $100 and Brenna Noonan received the Washburn Memorial Church Scholarship of $300.

NMCC students named President’s Scholars
PRESQUE ISLE — Sixty-three Northern Maine Community College students were honored recently at the annual President’s Scholar Luncheon on campus. The students earned the distinction of obtaining a perfect 4.0 during either, or both, of the spring or fall 2010 semesters at the college.
“Life takes you on all kinds of different journeys. It is hard to predict what the future will bring for each of you, but what you have gotten here is a strong foundation,” NMCC President Timothy Crowley told the students, many of whom were joined by family members or friends for the noontime event. “You are all very talented, committed and top students with bright futures, and I am very proud of your pursuit of excellence.”

UMFK students honored at academic banquet
FORT KENT — More than 50 awards and scholarships were presented to deserving University of Maine at Fort Kent students at the Senior Class Banquet and Awards Convocation on May 6, in the UMFK Sports Center.
The annual event, held the evening prior to commencement, is designed to honor graduating students for outstanding achievement throughout their years at the University and to award underclassmen who are continuing their education at UMFK, with financial assistance in recognition of their hard work and campus involvement.
The UMFK Alumni Association Scholarship was presented to Alan Dale McManus, of Fort Fairfield. Eight students were awarded scholarships from the Associated Faculties of the University of Maine System, Fort Kent chapter. Among the local recipients were: Emmaly Susanne Jurson, Hodgdon.
