FORT FAIRFIELD – After a series of weather-caused postponements the Tigers and Hornets were more than ready to take the field for last Friday’s Class D baseball and softball games.
Despite a final inning series of scoring by Fort Fairfield baseball, Ashland had an overwhelming run advantage and took home the victory, 16-6.
Tony Baker captained the Hornets with one double, two singles and four RBIs.
Lucas Belanger added one RBI single, and Henry Milligan had three runs for Ashland.
Josh Churchill pushed Tiger offense with two singles and one RBI. Pat Kinsey and Austin Bixler also added one RBI single each.
On the softball diamond, Hornet offense and defense combined to defeat the Tigers 17-2.
Senior Hornet Whitney Flint pitched an almost perfect game allowing one hit.
“Pitching and catching is key in all classes,” said head coach Terry Hunter.
Flint looks to only improve as the season progresses. “She’s got three pitches; two are real good ones—the fastball and the changeup. She’s working on her curveball,” said Hunter.
In offense, Flint notched three singles, three RBIs and scored three runs.
Teammate Taylor Baker posted three singles, and Mindy Chasse added two singles.
Maryl Shaw led the Tiger offense with one single.
Coming off of their victory, Hornet coaching staff were keeping vigilant before Tuesday’s match against Southern Aroostook.
“ I saw Southern Aroostook yesterday, and they almost beat Limestone,” commented Hunter. “I think they’ll be a formidable opponent.”
