Hornets get by UMPI Owls

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – Despite allowing eight runs in the first inning to Lyndon State, the University of Maine at Presque Isle battled back to an 8-8 tie in the fifth. However, the Owls gave up two runs in the bottom of the sixth, and weren’t able to counter-attack in the last innings of play, as they went on to lose their last game of the season to the Hornets by a score of 10-8.     In the afternoon rain the Hornets hammered out five hits, and took advantage of two walks and an UMPI error to jump out to an 8-0 advantage after one inning of play. The Owls chipped into the lead over the next four innings, and tied the score at 8-8 on Corey Fournier’s (Bradley) two-run single in the fifth.
UMPI pitcher David deKay (Hiram) tossed seven innings before giving way to reliever Shane Dupuis (Truro, N.S.). DeKay gave up 10 runs, nine of them earned, on 15 hits while fanning six LSC hitters.
A.J. Pennartz (Birch Harbor) was four-for-five, including a two-run homer, for the Owls. Teammate Victor Jacques (Gouldsboro) had three hits in the loss. Dupuis had two hits in the game, and DJ Charette (Millinocket) singled three times to help the Owl cause.
UMPI finished the season at 5-19.
Colby grasps the victory
Ryan Conlon had three hits, drove in four runs and scored twice as Colby College scored nine runs in the first three innings on the way to a 14-0 win over UMPI in non-conference play May 1.
Tyler Delaney (Trouro, N.S.)  and Pennartz each singled twice for UMPI. Colby split two games with UMPI earlier this season, and Dupuis was the winner that day for the Owls. However, the Mules got to Dupuis early this time with a lone run in the first inning on a Nick Spillane RBI single, and then scored six times in the second. The Mules scored another seven runs in the last four innings to secure the win.
Dupuis picked up the loss for the Owls, allowing nine runs on 13 hits in just over two innings. Both Brandon Boulware (Van Buren) and Brian Andrews (Fort Fairfield) helped to finish out the game from the mound, allowing a combined total of five runs.
Owl softball ends with Colby
Colby College’s tough pitching did not allow an earned run in both games of the afternoon doubleheader to earn 6-2 and 10-1 victories over the University of Maine at Presque Isle at Crafts Field on May 2.
The Owls lost four games over two days against Colby. UMPI closes out the season at 5-20.
The Mules got ahead quickly with four runs in the first inning of the first game, followed by two in the bottom of the third to make the lead 6-0. UMPI rallied and scored their two runs in the top of the eighth inning, but were scoreless in the ninth as Colby earned the 6-2 victory.
Senior Anna Lenentine (Monticello) singled twice and scored once for UMPI. Erin Pelletier (Madawaska), Rachel Nightengale (Hermon), Dani Humphrey (New Gloucester) and Nicole Russell (Newcastle) registered one hit a piece in the Owl loss.
Russell pitched a complete six-inning game, allowing six runs on 10 hits, walking two and fanning one Colby batter.
In the second game, Colby once again jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in two innings of play, and secured their win in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits. UMPI once again battled back in the top of the fifth inning. Nightingale reached first on a fielding error, advanced to second on a wild pitch and eventually made it home on a Billie Martin (Caribou) base-on-ball. The run was the UMPI’s sole score of the game, 10-1. Freshman Humphrey earned the lone hit, singling in the first inning.
Junior Erica Davis (North Yarmouth) pitched a complete four-inning game, allowing 10 runs on seven hits, walked four and struck out one batter.
UMPI drops doubleheader
Christine Gillespie drove in the typing run, and then came in with the game-winning run as the Colby softball team took the 6-5 victory over UMPI. UMPI fell 10-0 in the second contest in five innings on May 1.
In the first game, Humphrey blasted a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put UMPI on the board. Davis had a two-RBI homer in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 4. The Owls eventually grabbed a 5-4 lead in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Megan McCarthy (Westbrook). However, Colby fought back to steal the win. McCarthy finished the game with two doubles.
Owl pitcher Nicole Russell (Newcastle) received the loss from the mound, allowing six runs on nine hits. Russell walked four and struck out six.
In the second game, Davis made the only hits of the game for UMPI with a single and double. Davis took the loss from the mound, allowing 10 runs on seven hits and walking four.
