Since the Katahdin Cougars didn’t lose anyone to graduation last year, coach Marty McCarthy figured they would be high in the Class D standings.
“I figured we’d be up near the top somewhere,” he said.
As of the latest Heal Points they are in second with a 9-3 record.
The Cougars may be experiencing a bit of a hitting slump, but McCarthy said the defense is pretty solid.
“I am happy with that,” he said. “And, our pitching is pretty good. If you are going to go through a slump, you might as well have it midway through the season instead of the playoffs.”
McCarthy believes his team brings more maturity and more playoff experience than in the past.
“If we make the routine plays, we will be fine,” he said.
Starters for Katahdin are: seniors, Mickey Savage, catcher/right field; Brady McNally, first base; Mark “Mook” McGraw, shortstop; Kolby Gallagher, center field; Cody Cunningham, pitcher/first base; Brandon Robinson, catcher/pitcher/shortstop and Chris Cloukey, utility player.  Juniors playing are Jesse McNally, third base and Kyle McCarthy in right field, along with sophomores Billy Livezey, second base and Spencer Anderson in left field.
“It depends on pitching where my fielders play,” McCarthy said.
But, McCarthy had two games left on his schedule which could impact the Cougars  in the playoffs.
“If we win one of those two games, we may have a home playoff,” he said.
