Aroostook Times
Hodgdon — The citizens of Hodgdon are planning to celebrate Old Home Week early in August, this being the 90th anniversary of the first settlement of the town.
Nickerson Lake — Now is a good time to try the fishing at Nickerson Lake, the ice having gone out Wednesday, May 3.
Local — H.G. Niles is setting up in the basement of the Cogan building on Bangor Street, some fine bowling alleys he expects to open soon.

Queen — Miss Leola Kinney, candidate of the freshman class was elected queen of the annual high school circus.
Postmaster — Marita Peabody, who has been acting postmaster since February 2, 1935 was appointed to the position of postmaster on April 21.
Houlton Pioneer Times 1936 File PhotoNATIONAL RECOGNITION — In announcing this week his tenth All-American Weekly Newspaper Eleven, Prof. John H. Casey, country newspaper specialist at the University of Oklahoma school of journalism has made it known to the journalistic world that Bernard E. Esters of the Houlton (Maine) Pioneer Times place on this 1935-36 aggregation of journalistic, “Ground Gainers”, as business manager at right half-back.
Houlton — Friends of Lafayette Ervin, who has been teaching in the West for several years will be interested to hear that he was recently promoted to the position of principal of the Lincoln Junior High school in Forest Grove, Oregon.
Local boy — David, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Stevens of this town, who is stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Armstrong, Honolulu, reports that he has passed a very successful and interesting six months of army life. He says climate on the island has been perfect all winter with the sun shining all the time during daylight, even through a slight shower. Stevens receives the Pioneer Times each week.

Clean up — The Houlton Chamber of Commerce is urging all citizens to make a special effort this month to Clean-Up, Paint-Up and Fix-Up around the homes and places of business. The Board of Directors endorsed the program to get the debris picked up from winter and do all that is possible to encourage making the community more attractive.
Delayed construction —Construction of the $90,000 Educational Building and renovations to the Military Street Baptist Church has been temporarily delayed due to the illness of Vaughn Hersey, the Houlton contractor.
Hodgdon — Woody Howard entertained several of his third-grade classmates at his Campers Club, honoring Pedro Quint, who lost his personal belongings when his home was destroyed by fire last week. Other guests were David Sjoberg, George Farrar and Malcolm Nesbitt. The boys enjoyed a variety of games and hunts.

Retirement — More than 200 friends, colleagues and relatives from across the state gathered in the cafeteria of Houlton High School to honor longtime Houlton High School Principal, Elwood Scott, who is retiring at the end of this school year.
New principal — A. Andrew Buswell, who for the past six years has been principal at Enosburg Falls High School in Vermont, was the unanimous choice to be the new principal for Houlton High School.
Concert tour — The Houlton High School Jazz Generation performed for the University of Miami Singers during their 1986 tour with their director, Bob Bahr. En-route to Florida, they also performed at Cony High School, Mount Ararat High School, Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. and at Sea World. They competed at the All-American Festival with 10 other groups from all over the nation and won first place in the category.
