A lack of varsity teams is becoming more common in Maine high schools.
This year, the Greater Houlton Christian Academy will not have a girls softball program.
“It is strictly due to the number of girls who signed up,” said Barrett Potter, GHCA athletic director. “This is not an unusual thing in Aroostook County or the state now.”
Van Buren did not have a varsity softball team last year and the Katahdin girls and Hodgdon boys did not field varsity soccer teams this past fall.
“We notified the MPA (Maine Principals Association) prior to the season starting, so we are eligible for playing next year,” he said. “We are looking forward to having a team at that point in time.”
If GHCA administrators had waited until the season began to notify the MPA, there would have been a two-year penalty.
GHCA still has a varsity baseball team.
“We have strong numbers,” said Potter.
