Hartin receives SACS Principal’s Award

    Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School, is pleased to announce that Shelby Hartin of Crystal, a senior at Southern Aroostook Community School, has been selected to receive the 2011 Principal’s Award.
    The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
    “Throughout her years at Southern Aroostook, Shelby has distinguished herself in the classroom and as a leader in the school and the community,” said Porter. “She has been very active in many school and community-related activities that have accentuated her outstanding character and commitment to excellence. She very much deserves this recognition.”

    Hartin is involved in a variety of school and community activities. She has been active in Student Government for four years serving as class president. Hartin is a member of the National Honor Society, has participated in Dollars for Scholars, yearbook, band and varsity club, while attending Southern Aroostook.
    She has participated in varsity soccer, varsity basketball and varsity softball, earning All-Aroostook honors during her senior season in both soccer and basketball.
    Hartin represented Southern Aroostook as a delegate for Girls State and also as a representative to the Maine Youth Leadership Conference.
    She has participated in a variety of volunteer community service projects that include NHS Blood Drive, volunteered for the Island Falls Recreation Department, Southern Aroostook Soccer Camp, and the 21st Century After-School Program. She has also been selected as Student of the Quarter three times.
    Hartin is the daughter of Craig and Tammy Hartin.
    Hartin, Porter, and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center on Saturday, April 2 at 1 p.m.
    The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association.
    The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 130 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
