Caravan readies for 57th road trip

PORTAGE — Departure of the 57th anniversary Maine-Quebec Winter Carnival Caravan will be from Dean’s Hotel in Portage on Friday, Feb. 11, at approximately 7 a.m. Trailmaster Jim Dumond will be leading this year’s caravan through the north Maine woods to the crossing at St. Pamphile, Quebec.
The Caravan is in conjunction with the Quebec Winter Carnival’s closing weekend, Feb. 11,12 and 13. The original trip was made in 1957 when a group of Aroostook County businessmen ventured west to explore a road to Quebec. That original trip was in conjunction with the third Winter Carnival in Quebec.
Today, they are celebrating the 57th anniversary of one of the largest winter carnivals in the world. Events for the Caravan participants include a tour of parliament and a reception at the mayor’s office.
Registrations are still available for the Maine-Quebec Winter Carnival Caravan. Contact the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce at 764-6561 for information and registration forms. Additional information regarding the trip may be obtained by contacting Sarah Brooks at 551-6471.
