LAS VEGAS, NV – Chief Master Sargeant USAF (Ret.) Oliver Curtis Bell passed away October 26, 2010 in Las Vegas, after a period of declining health.
He was born in Sherman on July 18, 1918, the son of Clyde and Effie (Grant) Bell. He attended Littleton schools and received his GED through the Air Force. A member of the Greatest Generation, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1941 and served in World War 1, the Berlin Airlift, Korea and Viet Nam. While serving in Viet Nam, CMS Bell was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. Upon retiring from the Air Force, he was hired by the Saudi Arabian government to help them set up a system to maintain their air fleet and develop a training program for their mechanics.
He is survived by his children, Sandra Bell Wotton of Littleton, Judith Bell Tingley of Belfast, Donald Bell, Donna Bell Martin of Washington, Laura Bell Johnson, Paula Bell and David Bell of London, England. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Denman of Missouri and brother Leighton (Bud) Bell and his wife Geraldine of Hallowell.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Jean McCarthy Bell in 2006; a daughter, Barbara Presley in 2009; brothers Ronald, Merle (Mike), Roger, Alston, and Lowell, and sisters Mary Sloan, and Delores Effrien; friends Hartley and Almon Henderson and Henry and Frederick McBride.
A memorial service will be held in the spring. Although he was not a member of the Littleton Baptist Church, he was a supporter and attended when he was in the area. Donations may be made to the church in his memory at 1613 U.S. HWY #1, Littleton, ME 04730.
